I just took my key west to a friend to get the locked up steering fixed, after he replaced the steering arm and cables, he told me all it needed was grease… What he didn’t tell me about was getting the old grease out after he already installed the steering arm. Do I have to take the whole thing apart again to clean all the old grease out? Also there is still a bump when I steer the motor from side to side, is this caused by the old grease.? The motor is a 1996 evinrude 70 hp.
I wouldn’t worry about the old grease, I’d be worried about the bump. Check the linkage and make sure its not binding, the helm may have been damaged trying to force it loose. To get the old grease out of the steering tube, just loosen the nut on the cable, pull the cable out, clean the steering tube out with a shotgun barrel brush, lube it back up, put it back together and your good. But have the helm checked out to make sure you don’t have a problem
I’ll second that no feed back helm, but I’ve been using the Uflex and like it better. Biggest problem you may have re[placing it is you may have to pull teh motor off the boat to get the cable out of the tube, some boats you can do it with out pulling the motor, some you can’t. I just did a Sea Hunt right before Christmas and I’ve had to pull the motor, my 16 McKee, id did’t have to
before you go any farther, disconnect the arm that attatches the motor to the steering cable and try and turn the motor by hand
it should be VERY easy to move.
if not, the issue is in the motor and not the steering. the “bump” is still an issue that is most likely the helm
