steering problem

I have a 2011 sea hunt triton225 with a yamaha 150 on the back - have about 250 hours on the motor. I was coming in friday evening and I noticed a steering problem - when I turned the wheel slowly in either direction the boat would not turn until I had turned the wheel a fair amount and then the boat would turn sharply in that direction. If I turned the wheel sharply in either direction, it seemed to react appropriately. Hydraulic problem ? Thoughts ? I am fairly handly, but not when it comes to boats as this is my first boat. Any help would be appreciated.

Very likely you have some sticking check valves in the helm. They are easy to access. Remove the helm from the console after you remove the hoses. Flip it over any you can remove and clean the check valves. Go to the seastar website or check on youtude for videos. It is an easy job. After you clean them, then bleed the system with frsh sea star helm fluid.

Alternately, you could just be low on fluid, open the check port on the helm and see. If low fill to level, but you still need to find the leak…

i would start by adding/checking the fluid, but if its low, you have a leak that needs to be fixed
