Steering went bad on a good day fishing

Caught over a dozen reds, minnows on jigheads and white gulp shrimp, even had a double up. Then the problems.
Started up the motor to leave a spot and the wheel turned way to freely. Look back and the motor is not moving. Steering went out. Girlfriend put boat in idle and I steered boat home by shifting motor side to side. Any ideas on how to fix? Helm issue? Steering cables? It is a no ■■■■■■■■ steering on 01 sea pro 1800cc. Cable steering. The steering wheel moves the motor all the way to one side but not to the other. Motor moves freely side to side and up and down. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

Look under the helm and see if the cable snapped. There should be 2 nuts that tighten the cable going into the helm. See if those came loose also.

sounds like either a broken cable, or where the cable attaches to the helm, it has come loose

Thanks for both responses. I havent had a chance to look at it in the daylight yet so I will check the helm this afternoon.

Chris, more than likely I will be headed your way to replace and go ahead and knock out yearly service. I will PM you.(wish you were still on JI:wink:) Thank so much for the info as always.

im not to sure, but im pretty sure…

Pm me if you need help. All that stuff is easy to do. I could point you in the right direction.

Took the old cable out. It’s a ultraflex m66 ft15 093. I assume this is a 15ft length? Cable looks fine but going to replace cable and helm. Haven’t gotten helm off yet. (Believe the gears inside is the issue) Can this be easily replaced with a teleflex brand? What is my benefits of switching to hydraulic? Will it make a huge difference? The old cable was not easy to get out.

im not to sure, but im pretty sure…

Measure the cable length and buy the same. Get another no feed back helm. Pop the cap off the steering wheel and take off the nut. Then unscrew from inside the console and pull it out. Get the same helm. Should be $130 for the helm and another $125 for the cable. You really don’t need hydraulic steering for less then a 150hp.

And while the cable is out clean out the tilt tube on the motor.

Seels had the new parts for me. Cleaned out tilt tube, routed new cable.

The helm came off, but of course now the steering wheel is stuck. Soaked it in penetrating oil to let sit over night. Tried tapping it with hammer, heard a gear puller might be my next step.

im not to sure, but im pretty sure…

Yes, they almost always require a gear puller to remove. And a hammer.

How much $?

Scout 185

Not much. NAPA or similar should have a 3 or 4 arm wheel puller for maybe $20 or so.

Rented HD gear puller, popped right off, polished wheel with baking soda and vinegar. Looks new. So glad this project is done. Let’s go fish… Oh wait it’s freezing.

Anyone ever rewired their dash gauges and switches? I think that is the next project. Any ideas on schematics or place to purchase new harness? Seems tedious and time consuming, but just a lot of wiring and crimps.

Also, big thanks to loopervet for the help. Just needed a little confidence to force myself to get this project done.

im not to sure, but im pretty sure…

Depends on the gauges. Some plug in. Most boat stores will carry the harness or can at least order them. I order from boats.net quite a bit. If you want new switches look up new wire marine. He is on James island and makes custom panels, but also sells some sweet switches at a great price.
