Steering wheel removal?

I cant get it off. I sprayed pb blaster and pulled and hit with a hammer. I borrowed a gear puller from the auto parts store but the “teeth” or “jaws” were to thick to get between the helm and the wheel base. Any ideas? Gear puller w/ thin jaws would do the trick I think, but I looked at all the ones they had and none fit the bill.

How did you hit it with the hammer? Have you tried smacking the top of the shaft where it pokes through and the nut attaches. Have someone pull up on the wheel as you strike the shaft smartly. A brass or copper mallet works well so you don’t mess up the threads.

and dont be afraid to hit it!

I hit it with a rubber mallet and then a regular hammer. I gave more than a tap but nothing near a full whack. I had the wife pulling. Maybe need more muscle? I was afraid I’d f it up if I hit it too hard

Hairball, do you mean hitting the threaded shaft?

I guess my biggest fear is breaking the Seastar helm or steering wheel.$$$ The reason I am trying to remove the wheel is to replace the helm shaft seal of my hyrdaulic steering. It leaks a little when its hot out. Now I’ve got air in my system and I am trying to fix it “right”

I live on Jim if your offering

lowes has a puller used for getting faucet handles off.
leave the nut on the shaft, and pull, and whack it

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

Yes, hit the threaded shaft. If you use a puller like Chris V recommends and hit the top of the puller once you have it tight, you will be effectively hitting the threaded shaft.

I got a puller call me I bought one to take off my wheel

Brian

Woodfloats?

Try a vibrating hammer.

John

send me an IM if you still need the puller.

Put the nut on the shaft part-way so you don’t mar the threads

just replaced my wheel. Get your wife to pull the steering wheel while you hit the threaded stud pretty good. It will come right off and as long as you have the nut unscrewed so that you are not hitting the stud you should be fine.

From reds to marlin you got it.
