Got a yamaha throttle from round 2003 on a 50hp. The throttle doesn’t kick in smothly going out of neutral. The throttle friction works fine but has no effect directly out of neutral. The problem is when i push in the red button to move the throttle I usually end up using 2 hands - it tight. After its in forward increasin speed is smooth. I tried squirtin wd40 up in the plastic - didn’t help much. Any ideas? I meant to have chris v look when I had my boat in but forgot to ask him bout it. thanks
Help
Sorry i cant help much. I had the same problem with a honda but everything needed service so i took it to the shop. You could try calling butler marine or your service shop and ask them. Hope that helps some
crack open the control box and take a look. it may an obvious fix. prob needs grease and cleaning. corrosion gets up in there. Yamaha calls for marine grease on the mechanical components periodically.

ft worry.
also, i never used wd-40 on my “salt” applications. go to a dealer and get “anti-corrosion” spray. wd-40 has just tended to create more rust than before for me.
ft worry.
Most likely corrosion inside one of the throttle cables. Had the exact same problem with my 2000 C70 Yammy a couple of weeks ago. Get inside the remote control box and disconnect the cables from the shifter, and see if the shifting is still “stiff”. If not, then the culprit is probably the cable. I disconnected the shift cable from the rear of my motor also just to verify the shaft on the motor was not binding.
Took about 45 minutes to repair. I forgot how silky smooth the remote control was!
How much needs to be disconnected to remove cables? A lot of parts or what? Just want to know before I open it up.
Stink-
One of the more simpler jobs I’ve done. It depends on which remote control box you have. The one Cordray is showing is the 703. I have the 705 flush mount control box. On the 705, I removed the 5 screws on the cover that hides the cables (this part was located inside my console). The shifter cable is simply held on by a c-clip. I removed the c-clip, pulled the cable away from the shifter lever attachment. That was all there was to it.
