Stiper Tackle

My brother just got a place on Murray south of Shull Island. He’s asking me for advice on tackle for striper. Ive fished a few times for them using live herring so I got that covered. He has puchased some baitcasters with line counters and I told him to get two spinning rods for casting to schoolies. What about trolling lures or surface lures to throw when they are schooling on top?

Ive heard of striper swipers and grandma lures. Any other suggestions?

If they are schooling on top you can just about throw anything at them - only prob is that they are gonna be shirts more than likely. Our fishery at murray is kinda going through a transition right now (or at leat the last couple of years) Most of your larger fish will be below the suface fish - little george’s worked good for getting down and have some weight too so you can throw far and it will be down if you can get below the surface fish. Swipers are good but a zara spook will also work.

FN, swim baits, jerk baits and bucktails work well on schooling fish too. The nice thing about them is that they have a single hook instead of treble hooks and it’s much quicker to unhook a fish and get back out there when they are schooling. There’s nothing more frustrating that hearing fish splashing all around the boat while you are trying to work a treble hook out af a fishes mouth. The downside is you don’t get the thrill of seeing them pounce on it like you do with the top water baits. Also, you can cast striper swipers and similar topwater baits a mile if you are not right up on the fish.

I usually rig up with both.

Thanks. What about trolling?

Tell him for summer trolling lures to get 2 Stretch 25’s and 2 Umbrella rigs. For winter we usually pull live bait or pull bucktails. Also during winter you can pull U-Rigs at about 6’-10’ deep which will be right behind your boat but you’ll still get hook-ups. I like White and Lime Green Bucktail Jigs with Chartruese and Green Hawg Callers if you can find them. Those are the best. Me n Pops swear by them. I would use Bucktails on schoolies b/c you can cast them a mile and you can also get htem under the fish and jig up to try and find bigger fish (Like kings under bonita)

What speed do you troll your bucktails when you troll in the winter?

I use Mirrior lures when fish are holding near the surface…The catch 3 series works best for me…Charlie plugs , bucktails and berry spoons also work well…When im trolling, i usually use a 3 way swivel with either a strech 25 and a bucktail or just 2 bucktails…Before long, u will be able to chase the birds to find the fish…

I always troll at idle. 2.5 generally
