They are just off of the southern most point of the first island in the middle of folly creek. They are about 2-3 feet or so long and about two inches thick or around and there are a bunch of them. They are in the mud right off the point and visible at low tide. Anyone know what they are for?
I’d rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave.
I’m thinking they are part of a S.C.O.R.E oyster reef. If you look at the other end of the island at low tide you can see the oyster shell filled gabion baskets. Most likely part of the same project, but you could check with the DNR.
probably a commercial oyster lease attempt at regrowth- they’ve been there a while. an old technique is to dip sticks in concrete, which allows a hard enough surface for spat to attach during the summer oyster spawning season. once the sticks are covered in oyster growth, the clumps get heavy enough to slough off with the concrete shell, and then they begin forming a reef if they don’t sink into the mud. the sticks just rot away over time after the concrete is gone.
