Some theives decided to head down to Bristol Marina late last week to have their pick of whatever gear they wanted…got to my boat Saturday morning to get a full day fishing in, camping on Capers, and a Sunday morning full of more fishing to find all of my rods/reels, stick-it anchor, and fishing gloves gone (who steals fishing gloves, really??). Apparently these idiots repositioned the security camera’s too so the CPD have some prints and got their ugly mugs on video. I doubt our gear will ever turn up, but you never know; figured I’d post here and let everyone know!
Same thing happened to us on July 31st at Ripley Light Marina. Lost two Penn 3/0, Penn 440ssg, Penn Fierce and two Star Rods. Total crap. They even came onto our boat while we were sleeping on it. Gutsy jerks. Sorry for you, too.
Yep, got me too. I was the first one that reported it too. They know that some users don’t go down to their boat very often so I’m thinking its a contractor or a construction worker working on the hotel on Lockwood. They got me for my cooler, stick-it anchor, boga-grip, nets, and the kicker: my sea-dek mat. I couldn’t believe that one, they had to rip it off the floor (its adhesive backed).
Anyways, give me a shout down in J21 if you ever want to buddy up and fish!
Pathfindermike - unbelievable! Makes me sick. My insurance company is saying I didn’t have fishing equipment coverage, only “Personal Effects” coverage and won’t cover the theft…time to switch insurance companies.

I would have thought that fishing equipment was “Personal Effects”. Shows what I know! Sorry to hear about your loss. Just out of curiosity did they “Break-Into” any locked compartments? I typically unmount my GPS and put it in the T-Top compartment and lock it, and I keep some stuff in the head and lock that - those locks are not much of course, anybody could pop it without much effort. wondering if I should change my habit and take the stuff home with me.
RY - I would’ve thought so too…Progressive no longer has my business.
Jeepers: I would call the marina and ask Eric or McKenzie. I know the Jet Docks got hit, and I think Eric said D Dock did as well, but not positive on that.
5 total docks, mostly the jet docks I believe but maybe more. There are changes coming forward at the Bristol but everything I have on my boat now worth a dime will be taken with me from now on.
I used Progressive because State Farm wouldn’t cover it because of the hurricane zone its in. If you find another insurance provider you’re comfortable with let me know.
I just signed up with Boat US Angler’s policy…they also have a specific coverage for guides, which is the one I went with. Much better rates than Progressive for more coverage, they also cover Named Storms which Geico does not. I was impressed!
All - I thought I’d provide an update on this case for those that are interested or were victims of the theft. I’ve been working with Investigator Deming of Charleston Police Department. They have found the suspect, and have THOUSANDS of dollars of gear that has been turned in by the suspects ex-girlfriend (he even had a leaning post from a CC boat sitting in his office). He believes most of the gear came from Remley’s and Bristol Marina’s. If you had stuff stolen anytime recently I’d recommend giving him a call. I found 2 of my three rods in the pile…amazing!
Good Luck. Investigator Deming’s number is 843-720-3913. I told him I’d post here to get the word out.
This is why it is imperative to ALWAYS report ANY stolen gear to local authorities. I have worked my share of burglary and larceny cases and I can tell you that police need thorough descriptions and , if possible, provide serial, model #'s. You may have something stolen and it gets recovered, but unless you have a way to definitively ID it, you are probably out of luck. Kind of hard to prove something is yours if you haven’t accurately described it, much less reported it stolen. It’s always a great day when you can lock up a dirtbag and take the stuff back and give it back to the victims.
