Stolen Rods

I paddled out to capers today with the intentions from fishing the surf this morning. Got there at 8:00 and ran through all my mullet on spinner sharks. Went to get more bait in the creek behind Capers but the negative tide had made I to shallow for me to paddle the Hobie. Decided to walk through it on foot with the castnet and leave the kayak staked out Infront of the creek…big mistake. I come back ten minutes later to find a group of kids my age speeding off with 3 of my rods. I started shouting at them and for some reason they dumped the rods in the middle of the inlet…I’m guessing they did this in case they got caught. Upon further inspection they also tried to take my tackle box and yeti, but I had them strapped down pretty tightly…they did end up taking my costas which were in the tackle box and a tackle tray containing all my weights and hooks. I am very bummed out , but what can you do. If anyone is planning on going over there this week, could you keep an aye out for any of the rods. I’m praying that the heavy lead weights I was using has them pinned down to the sandbar out there. Looks like I’ll be saving up for a while.

dang, that sucks. were you able to call any authorities while you were out there to give a description?

Called into IOP marina because it looked like they were headed that way. Also talked to 5 other fisherman who were taking a break from the heat on capers as well as a group of 3 kayaked who were heading over to camp and fish capers. Warned them to keep an eye on their gear and what not

(**() that sucks. Did you try to call the police/DNR and get them to look for a spray painted boat? That’s something they might be able to actually find.

So what kind of rigs are you left with now?

If you’re interested in shark fishing I could really use someone that has a yak to get my baits out for me. I haven’t hit the water hard yet due to some household needs but they are basically all done now so I have the green light. I would be more than willing to let rotate who gets to reel them in. I think my big rig count in 2x 113 Senators, 1x 114 Senator, and 1x Squall 60. I have two smaller Senators and a 8500 Penn too.

First, Most, Biggest
I want to catch them all

Somebody with a jon boat could volunteer to help this young man drag the bottom of the inlet maybe?

I used some very large treble hooks, and brought up my brothers rod and reel last year in fresh water.

“The big one’s still swimming, let’s go.”

That’s horible… If they looked young they proably have an Instagram - they might have a pic of their boat on their page. Thats proably a one of a kind boat. It’s not likely but worth a shot.

Thanks Mac. I will have to give this a try. I feel like they couldn’t have gone that far with that big sandbar in the middle of the intlet amd all of the troughs right off the beach. I will look around on instantagram screamingdrag. Maybe there will be a picture of them flashing their “new” gear and sun glasses

I lost a rod a few years back in about fifteen feet of water. Knew about where it was so I dragged a big hopkins spoon over the site with no luck. Went back home and cut a 12 inch long section of 11/2 inch pvc pipe. Then I cut the hooks off of five coat hangers with short pieces of the straight section attached. Then I duct-taped all five clothes hanger hooks near the end of the pvc pipe so they were pointing in every direction. Drilled a hole thru the other end of the pipe and added 25 feet of heavy chord. Took this contraption (it wasnt pretty) back to the general area of the loss and started dragging. Within fifteen minutes of dragging, one of the hooks caught the rod and I happily pulled it in. I was bound and determined to get that outfit back. The homemade grappling rig worked way better than the big spoon, and cost practically nothing.

Redfish, are you the guy who caught the sharpnose when I hauled yer bait out for you bout May, 15 or so. There was a couple with kids that
had been beached the previous night? (green YAK }??
If it’s you, I guess it was a random yakattack. Never had problems out there. Even on the weeks of 4th’s. There’s some hatred out there. Hate Crime??
We don’t. Up stream from IOP MARINA last week I was beached @ party Isle. Party pulled up and asked me to pull in my lines so they could beach, Had caught 2 eaters and was bubbling on my own and said have at it. And thence we partied for a while. A lot ain’t so pleasant on Yaks and Boards. I know ya’ll scare fish with yer’ shadows, but not yer’ wake !

Correction Redfish, It was 5/16 @ 7pm or so. I was on 19ft. skiff t-top.
Memory of the calendar ain’t as important anymore.:sunglasses:

Haha no don’t think that was me. I have a red Hobie…I call her Ole Rojo haha. That was my first trip out to capers on the kayak and probably my last

I would have had to try jump on a near by boat and chase them down!! They needed a good old fashioned beating. I really hate a thief!! What happened to the days of leaving your doors unlocked and stuff unsecured with no worries. Gone completely I guess. Sorry to hear that dude, but a little investigative work and that boat and occupants can be found. Someone local to the area has to know that boat. Call DNR,
If they are local they may be well known In the area by DNR and others. Don’t just let it go.

Pm sent, good luck finding the thieves. Don’t give up, they are bound to do it again if they aren’t caught

Sorry for ya Redfish. Get out there on a Low with treble hooks & fan cast the area they dropped them. Not a lot on the bottom to snag.

I was thinking a 30:06 with a scope and if you see them, take out their motor.
I believe they would shart themselves.
