Stone Crab

Where and how do they catch local Stone Crab. At some Saturday and got three different answers from the staff.

i think the commercial stuff is almost all traps, same as blue crabs.

lots of guys stick their hands up the burrows on minus tides too, can make a killing if you’re good at it… they can make a killing if you’re bad at it.

my dad catches them in his regular crab pots…seems he catches more on rough bottom or in creeks with lots of oyster banks which makes since since thats where we see them when we are gigging too…but have to warn you…they do not taste good at all:wink:

They were going for around 25/lb last week now they are 17/lb. Thats over here on the Gulf side. Screw paying that!! They use wood traps or plastic traps here. They say less light getting into the traps increases your catch. But like the others say, caught plenty in regular wire traps back home. Being close to oysters or structure helps.

I have them at 8.99 lb

Cruise along any oyster covered bank @ night and you can pick stoneys up with a flashlight and a stick. Dont forget the rules on claw harvesting though-only the big claw-always leave 'em one.

I get them when flonder gigging but they’re not real plentiful.

I usually catch one or two in my crab pots which are dropped off my dock just below the normal low water mark. No big numbers of stones, but sometimes I get some really nice ones. I’d like to know how to catch more of them, I think they are here in good numbers. I know that the redfish eat the smaller ones as I have seen them in their stomachs. Any ideas are welcome…

Hit a crabman up and give him 20 bucks. You will be happy.

The Kiawah River is the best place to catch stone crabs, esp.between Kiawah and Seabrook.
