I didn’t say it was new. We’ve been throwing popper and stickbait at 200# bluefin in the NE for decades.

Your tackle quality is much more important as the fish size grows though. We were fishing some high dollar gear and some not so high dollar.

The folks at Ocean Tackle International(OTI) are a good place to start for all the right gear.

Thanks for the info on popper fishing. I’ll be sure to have some on board on my next trip out!

H&T

I was just making the comment for all of the doubting idiots in that last thread. When and if we ever get a normal run of YFT’s back here again I’m sure it could be done. The last big YFT runwe got on 6 years ago I would imagine we could have caught them on poppers as we were in acres of them. I have done that around the rigs in La, and it is a hoot.

Courtland I just said that for all of the doubters from the last thread.

I wasn’t hating on ya, just adding to the fact that this ain’t new. Although as far as I know my bft from last week was the first on stickbait(even though hanappa reeled it in). I got the first on popper yesterday and the only one to get them on the jig(x2).

If you can’t tell I am now patting myself on the back.

Nice job on the new unique fishing style for the Carolinas.

I observed the show from another boat and it looked like alot of fun. Not pointing the finger at courtland, yall seemed to keep to yourselves, but some of the other boats were charging right through the schools then casting, pushing them down. If this is going to become popular which I am defenatly going to try just remember how spookey these fish can get. I think we ended up with 9 fat ones. Nice job though! I would love to get one on the fly rod.

Ahhh… Mr. Courtland, sir…thanks for the info as I also have never understood why some people are so secretive(childlike)…after all most of the time others don’t go to the effort you do to really get on the fish…and thanks also for your efforts regarding the safmc…I enjoy reading your material…you are obviously a gentleman…

You are absolutely right about running them down! We did try to stay away from everyone or tucked behind the commercials, out of the way. We idled around at 1-2 mph popping behind the boat then eventually the fish would pop up close enough to cast to. Chasing them down is not going to do you any good, and will do more harm than good. Good point!

Sorry about the mystery fish that dumped you!

I agree with you Court, too many secretive fishermen on this site. I also agree that you can give out theinfo and most peoplr won’t take the initiative to work hard at perfecting the system anyway. That bft in the picture also looks like a stste record to me, as my 30 lb’ers surely don’t look that big. I, too, was ridiculed for advising people to change from live bait to frozen cigars in the early 90’s; we have seen the results. Poppers are definitely in my future, for King Mackerel too. We ole’ timers, {I’m 67 years of age}; remember the Sea witches, Drone spoons, split tail mullet, Hopkins spoons, etc used offshore in the 50’s to 70’s. The KM tournaments put people onto live baiting, and meat-only lures for the past 40 years; glad to see someone RE-GRESS back to artificials. I personally believe in bluewater we caught more fish on naked lures than with 'hoo, of course everyone has their opinion and experiences. THANKS for sharing your info with all, and topwater is what’s left right now, so let’s enjoy what we have. lol and God bless…PS: Almost forgot the easiest and most fun lure of all, the cedar plug naked of course.

Looks like you guys had a blast. Thanks for the info Courtland. Those lures sure dont smell as bad as those ballys.Good job!!

Courtland, did you weigh the tuna in question?

You have received a lot of attention for a job well done.

While I am not ready to sell off the 50 wides, if you would autograph one of those poppers I would give it a try. Make to S4G, add some cool comment with your signature.

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.

Consider these reasons why people may keep secrets…

  1. They want an edge in a fishing tournament
  2. If we were all apex fishermen, how many fish would be left? If most people suck at fishing, then wouldn’t there be more fish around?
  3. What’s in it for me to teach everyone else how to fish?
  4. Part of the fun of fishing is the learning process.
  5. Avoid crowding… If I told the world that Feb was the best month to catch blackfin, how many boats will be running over m WWWWTFBWWWTB at the hole?

It’s not rocket science. People invented secrets for a reason!!!

PS. I had a few more reasons, but I would rather not share at this time…

nice job courtland

Tuna was not weighed, I would say just shy of 30#. But you all can call it 40, that’s cool.

As for the autograph, well, I haven’t figured out the cost structure yet. Stay tuned for my world tour.

Skinneee…I love your reason #3…“what’s in it for me”…that’s the problem with young people like you…I don’t have a problem with a secret here and there, after all that’s part of fishing, but you show that you’re not very classy or gentlemanlike or mature when you say-“what’s in it for me”…trust me when I tell you that I’ve caught a few yft and bft and I never heard anyone at Toler’s or any other gathering place say such when we were having a beer talking a little fishing…ymmv…

Cudos, Adios; “What’s in it for me?” has got the world where itis today, GREEDY. “Share and share alike” is the old saying I like to live with. Share with me and I will share with you, everybody wins…except the fish of course, and the good Lord will take care of them…
