I am starting to feel like I should actually read this thread to see what this is all about.
Maybe when it reaches 10 pages…

Don’t worry Phin here are the clif notes:
Courtland caught some blackfin tuna on poppers with $1500 spinning setups by casting at the schools. He out fished the trollers this one day.
Some congratulated him but the rarely heard from crew from Hilton head chimed in and tried to beat up Courtland on the internet and one dude even visted his office to discuss in person for publishing anything about catching fish out of Hilton head.
The waters out of Hilton head are apparently owned by a few pompous arseholes and I strongly recommend staying away and chartering with the nicer Charleston and Georgetown boats since these guys have such issues with people and knowledge.
Then skinnee said something about keeping secrets and adios got pissed cause he is childish, skinnee tried to defend himself. la,la,la. Skinnee is just pissed that he has to buy more black barts to add to his spread this year.
Mac Daddy is just trying to get everyone to hug and make up.
Basically the wind is blowing and people have nothing else better to do.
Also needs to be noted that Courtland is not a local but has come on the seen and is doing things his own way and having success at it. Good for him… whatever… BUT Hats off to the guy for getting as involved in the fishery and closing by putting so much time and money into the DC trip.
For the record I still plan on the popper vs trolling fish off/ego trip/ further pissing off the HH crowd internet tourney.

The Outer Banks story makes a lot of sense to me also, plenty fish for everybody; especially if we practice catch and release like good stewards of the sea. I once caught 35 KM in two days and kept {5}, still had more than I needed and felt guilty. That kind of thinking would keep us from overfishing the resource, instead of being concerned how many boats are in one spot. I know I’m dreaming, but catch and release should be the theme of this site; yet we never hear those words here, AND we congratulate those who bring back excessive amounts of fish to the dock. Example, the charter boat that kept {60} Dolphin last year, fortunately some did chastise that cpt. for being greedy on this site. Of course, that decision was up to the party more than the cpt., but the cpt. should have encouraged catch and release after 15-20 for a party of {6}, maybe he did, we don’t know. I know the limit is 10 per person for a reason, but we don’t always need to take the limit. The limit for KM is too high when {6} are on board also. All these subjects have been hashed over and over on this site, except catch and release and closure from the side of being in favor of closure for a short term, which I understand your point that it will probably not be short term. When the KM limit was first imposed fishermen got irate also, but the long term effect has been good in my opinion. Now not many care about the KM limit due to the mercury content in KM, otherwise we would be still hearing negative comments on that threatened closure too. If I remember correctly, we have a precedence on closure when the KM had a closure in the Gulf for a short time, I may be wrong, but that’s what I remember.

Agreed, Skinnee: I don’t buy into the endangered listing either; and I ESPECIALLY don’t agree with long term closures. One year at the most, but like you, I don’t think that is the answer either. The reports on this site look VERY good to me, if cornholin’ and overfishing the Hole, Ledge, Banks, etc. bothers you and others, then the answer is catch and release in my opinion, meaning low catch #‘s allowed, and enforced; BUT, the main issue with catch and release is the willingness voluntarily to do it. That’s my point on regulation, closure, harvest, etc. In bad years your point is well taken to redistribute the hatchlings. lol on your bus trip, I hope you are VERY successful. In reference to Sharkey inviting people to fish the surf, YES he invites people to fish close together as a community for comraderie, and good ole’ fun. Those guys are very close buddies, AND they share a lot of secrets on this site to help others be successful too. Of course, sharks were never on the endangered list until that fihery became popular about 10 years or so ago. Sharks have a slow reproduction rate, so they should have a limit too, as they do. I fished NC all my life until 6 years ago, so I’m not a local; therefore I just try to be a peacemaker. In NC, the Wildlife Commission does NOT do anywhere near the great job that DNR does in SC, you guys are very fortunate thanks to Don Hammond and others. The Charleston 60 Reef is the most outstanding Reef I have fished from Morehead City to Charleston for NEARSHORE fishing. The Y-73 and Commanche Reefs/wrecks are the most productive I have seen other than the Atlas Tanker in Morehead, and the Frying Pan Tower in Southport; there, I have given all my SECRET fishing spots on this site, too. Of course they are far from secret, like the Hole, Ledge, Banks here. I almost posted where I caught the 35 KM, but couldn’t quite do it, I will say it is on that list, so popular spots DO still produce even though being overfished. Hopefully, with the crowds getting bigger every year, w
Hopefully they will close the Georgetown Hole next.
Thanks for the post ChumKing; please elaborate a little more on your opinion of the closure of the Georgetown Hole. I’m not sure if you are serious or not, your reasons for the closure, what effect you think closure would have, and last, do you agree with Skinnee that 100 boats is the norm for the Hole on any given Sat.?

We can discuss demand for pie, corn, or easily caught fish.
Does about as good as discussing how much matza is available in Tel Aviv.
We can discuss the difference between jealousy and envy. We can even discuss how much value to place on certain information.
It matters not. We will be having these discussions only in history classes or on a porch swing or bar stool soon. This website will become www.charlestondidn’tfightlosingitsfishing.com
Georgetown Hole will be closed to bottom fishing if we stay here arguing about whether to troll or cast to blackfins. The proposal to do it is on the table now, and it’s the preferred alternative! This is no longer speculation or fear-mongoring. It is coming.
As soon as next year, if you’re casting or trolling at the GTH, the Royal Terrace, the Deli, the Needle, the Edisto Banks or SWB’s (OR WHEREEVER AT THE LEDGE) and are caught with any one of 73 species of snapper-grouper complex fish in your bote or with “assessible” bottom fishing gear on your boat, then you are going to be breaking the law.
Time to ACT. There are threads all over this forum suggesting how.

Sharkey, I brought up your name in reference to inviting fishermen to come fish with you in the surf, giving info on this site, and being willing to SHARE the wealth of fish and sharks in the surf; as compared to Skinnee, and some others who don’t want crowds at their offshore hole, and BELIEVE this site is causing them too many problems at the Georgetown Hole, Ledge, etc.
“The big one’s still swimming, let’s go.”
Mac you are way off on Skinny, he has taught me plenty about trolling, and he always has a boatfull when we go. On any given trip, I have seen him call over charter boats to come work a weedline or rip. I understand where he is coming from, as I get Emails all the time asking for #'s, from people that I don’t know or have never met. Don’t get me wrong, I am quick to help anybody catch more fish, but some things are kept to myself.

i don’t know skinnee so i can’t say anything about him.paul i agree with you.i’ll help anybody i can.that’s just my oponion.i don’t expect everybody to agree with it.if any of the off shore guys wants to surf fish with me they are more than welcome.i don’t expect they would.i probably wouldn’t either if i had a boat to get off shore.anyway the invite is always open.i have plenty of gear if you don’t have the surffishing gear.
