STONER(6-14-09) Warsaw!

PJ, Jeff and I had a short day today with obligations to start our return trip by 2PM. We decided to go deep anyway. Got bait on the beach at sunup and headed off in a steadily building Westerly flow. By the time we hit 135’ it was a solid 3’ and 12-15kts. of wind, we set out the spread early and did a little high speed troll until 160’. The high speed only turned up a 20# king and we set the trap at normal trolling speeds for the last 10 miles out to 220’, where we planned to bottom fish for a bit. Took two mahi in 155’, I released one boatside and stuck one in the box and we pushed on. Nothing else, not one piece of weed, the temperature gauge didn’t move, all the west wind had blown the water out I figured. By now we only had one 10# dolphin and we moved in on the bottom #'s. The wind was still whipping and fortunately the current was moving to the South, the combined forces, although uncomfortable, made for minimal drift. By now it was noon and we only had 2 hours to make up lost ground. It took a while to figure out the bite but we eventually did. With pogies out on drift lines and 3 of us on the bottom we started to catch, nothing huge but we got what we went for. A dolphin here, a grouper there, throw in a couple of snapper and we ended with a respectable box. Rolled in at 2PM in a bumpy but flattening ocean.

I think that things are open for the summer, at least that much longer anyway.

The council has voted for a closure, but it has not been approved by NMFS at this point. If\when it does get approval, there will be a 30 day comment period before it is signed into law. So, it's still "in process" at this point, but not in effect. So, at a MINIMUM you have 30 days left, but the count doesn't start ticking until it get's approved (if it does)...

Nice warsaw BTW!

Very Nice! What was in the stomache of that grouper?

The water is waaaaayyyyyy out. Probably 1000’, I did hear of a very respectable catch from the BFT area on Saturday. Might be worth the run, good luck.
