Anchored up in 90’ @ high noon. Caught 17 ARS and (2) 8’ dusky sharks in an hour and a half. Back @ the dock @ 3. Every snapper seemed to be 19.5". One or two may have been legal but I was fun fishing anyway. Lots of pogies on the beach.
I was being sarcastic…if you bottom fished recently you would know that this has been the best ARS year in a long, long time, best I have ever seen and best that many people that have fished longer then I have ever seen…
Of course, that is irrelvent when it comes to complete closure of the fishery in 90 days…
Nice report. Sounds like you were where we ended the Sunday trip. Good to here that the fish are getting back into pradictable habits again. Got a few new rigging ideas that I’m excited to try out! Up north on business, be back Sunday.

I realize you were being sarcastic. I have bottom fished recently - I would venture to say much more than you - and don’t appreciate being called an idiot by someone who doesn’t even understand my response.
Smaller average size is one of the most widely accepted indicators that stocks are stressed. If you think that there are more red snapper now than years past, then you are mistaken. I have been catching them for a long time, and the big sows are certainly much harder to come by now than they were 30 years ago. I hate to say it - because it plays right into the hands of the environmentalists who are trying to shut us down - but the fishing is definitely not what it used to be. I’m not saying that seasonal closures, moratoriums, or MPAs are warranted, but the average size seems to be on the decline and the fishing is much tougher now than it used to be. Like it or not, it’s the truth.

What's rediculous about the whole thing is that the SAFMC data shows an UPTREND of snapper population for the last 10+ years. But, they are saying we are overfished based on data from the 1940-1950's which defines what the population *should* look like. That basically means, red snapper are don

The more smaller fish there are the harder it is to get your bait to the big ones. Catching more small fish is not indicative of less big fish…it’s more indicative of MORE fish, comprende? Where do all the small fish come from, magic?? or offspring of big fish?

Also, I would like to hear Goat’s opinion on this… I have heard that snappers tend to school in roughly the same size (a lot of fish do). My few observations suggest that this is fairly true. The last school of red snappers that I saw (in June) had about 75+ fish in it and I probably saw 3-4 that were barely legal. If that is true, it might suggest that if you start catching the little ones that it’s time to pick up and move. Probably no sense in keeping on pulling them up from the depths if they don’t get any bigger. I saw anothr large school October last year and noticed the same thing. Probably 75-100 fish in that one and not one that I wanted to take the chance on. They all seemed to be about 19"
I was oput in 105ft earlier in the year with a buddy of mine and we reeled in ARS 4 hours strait till our arms were like jello and not a one was 20". Every single one was 16.5-19 3/4. We had a blast cranking them up though i will say that.
Also went out on the thunderstar for 24 hours 2 weekends ago and we fished 165ft (so they say) the whole 24 hours and i did not see one ARS come up!And believe it or not there was only 1 groupa on the boat when we got back to the dock.It was barley 10 lbs maybe and he won the fish pool with that. Between my buddy and i our b-liner limit was 40 for the 2 days we were out and we only brought home 17. Pretty much sucked when we would anchor for 2-3 hours and nobody was catching nothing but a sharpnose here and there. Wish the capt would have moved a lil quicker and tried to get over the spot but hell what do you expect for 180 bucks!Ill def be going on that trip again to try for the gag that i have never caught! Does anyone know why grouper are usually not caught on the thunderstar? As soon as i came home from the trip i looked on this site and there were 3-4 post from guys out the same day tearing up the grouper but 31 people on a 110ft boat for 24 hours and we could not get one for nothing.Oh and i really got my hopes up when we got down to the dock to board the boat and the Teaser had just got in and had a but-load of the groupa nailed up on the board…looks to me you got to come off with more cash to catch them? Thanks for any info.

As a general rule, they do seem to school by size. That’s not to say we don’t catch big ones mixed in with the little guys now and then; it definitely happens frequently enough that I won’t move right away if I’m catching the little guys. The big ones either don’t seem to “school” a whole lot, or they just wise up after you catch a few.
I haven’t been keeping up with the bottom bumpin’ lately. Have heard alot about the season closing on certain spieces. What is happening with the the grouper, snapper complex. Is the season going to close during the winter for sure? Commercial and recreational fishing?
