STONER- OffShore Sunday

Wanted to get 1 more crack at some topwater tunas before they scatter for the summer and hey, grouper season was finally open too. Not thrilled with the nice weekend forecast and full moon but we hit it anyway. Got 2 of my ooooooold crew together and added my son who has been neck deep in inshore fly fishing. I was surprised he wanted to go but exclaimed that he needed to get tight on something bigger than #5.

I was concerned about the number of boats that would be out there so I picked the most obscure ledge I had. We did not see another boat all day. We got what we came for with a few bottom bites, topwater feeds and a school of slingers. My boy made the most of it with a scamp on the jig on the first drop and topwater AJ out of a surface feed. He then decided he would just throw lures the rest of the day and got nearly all of the tuna bites. Sardine pattern was getting crushed.

That cigar looks good. Anywhere to buy locally in the G-town/PI/MI area?

Short answer is no, although the Post Office delivers there I am sure:)

It is not easy for retailers to pick up a “one off” item. You have to set up another account for bookkeeping, ordering, payments, etc… Most local shops order 90% of their goods from 1 or 2 wholesalers. They have great terms, online ordering, free shipping and a rep that comes to see them every week.

It is actually difficult to be in the “local” fishing business without using them. Custom shops tend to have more accounts and a more varied product line. Likely, a bunch of gear at prices you’ve never seen before. We just don’t have the population here to sustain that type of operation.

I do have a few things in the works that will vastly broaden my appeal and I think a few retailers will likely be looking for me. Until then…visit my site. The money still stays local.

I hear ya, I was just heading that way tomorrow to fish for the weekend and thought I would pick a few up if they were around. I will be ordering some soon. Thanks.
