STONER Prospecting 9-6-13

Sometimes I ride, nowhere in particular, just scouting for new to me areas. It is an important part of fishing I feel. You need to sacrifice some time and money to find new areas. Today was such a day. The fish tallies don’t matter, nor the fuel bill.

I headed out with one rider, Sebastian, and no bait. These are minimalist trips where I stare at the sounder for the better part of the day. I don’t like the extra pressure of a big crew to put on the fish. We would set out a 2 or 3 rod spread and drop jigs if we found some bottom.

The morning passed uneventfully with 2 cudas, an AJ and pinkies. I made a 15 mile move around lunch to a blank area on the plotter area. We deployed the 2 rod spread and almost immediately got a weehoo.

[

Made another pass or two through the area and got another weehoo, bigger than the first, maybe low 20’s. On one of the passes around the area I had marked some suspended fish. We searched that area and found little relief but stopped and fired down the jigs to see who was home. Sebastian grabs this nice gag and some dinner plate size triggers.

[

Made one more move of about 2 miles and found another load of fish. The jigs grabbed another grouper and a few more triggers as well as some AJ’s. This area had some nice relief and a small ledge as well. We set off for home knowing we had a lot more work to do in this area. Ended the day with a couple wahoo, a couple grouper and a nice mess of triggers. Not bad for prospecting.
