Got home yesterday from spending the week with my parent in Massachusetts. My brother, son and I fished the south shore of Rhode Island for a few hours Thanksgiving morning. Water temp was 50 and it was a cool, but sunny. I finally caught 4 schoolie stripers at the west wall of Pt. Judith on a Deadly Dick. That was it for all of us.
Headed out this morning without my son as he is getting over a cough. It was a good thing because it was cold with 10kt north wind and took 3+ hours to catch the first fish which was a fat 16" trout. Just after that I noticed a bunch of gulls working the bank about 150 yds down. Went to go take a look and they were after some shrimp coming out of a small marsh drain. Started casting a Zman and at first had a hard time keeping the birds off it…had to cast away from them then let it sink. Hooked up immediately on a 26+" red…tagged and released. Saw another fish flash in front of me and landed a 19" fish. Then two more overslot fish on successive casts. All tagged and released. Had the hook pull on another that was close to thirty. Then some goverment looking RHIB with waterjets blasts by at over 30 kts and blows up the area. Fished a bunch of other areas and landed only a couple trout before catching 3 more reds on the way back to the ramp. Put in 8 hours on the water. All together a nice day, but really had to work for it. Lots of gulls diving on shrimp all up and down the river. About 1 out of 4 times I saw and caught fish in the spot where they were diving. All fish except one trout and a red taken on either a Zman Paddlersz or a glow DOA. Lots of small shrimp still in the creeks. Culled through 10+ dozen to get 3 doz mediums and some eating size.
Total of 3 trout and 7 reds which were tagged.
