Stono 8/25 - Big Red

Thought for sure I had my personal best inshore red beat today…

Plans were to make my way south to a new spot in Wadmalaw Sound that was very good for trout. Started fishing at 7:30 stopping at a couple places working the bank with a Zman Paddlerz on a flutter hook. Saw a few fish running the bank including a big flounder jump, but no hits. Water was really muddy in most places. Made my way over to a spot in the Church Creek area not yet tried and on the fourth cast the water exploded and I knew I had a good fish. Just when I begin to really play the fish my trolling motor start bumping bottom and snagging on the submerged timber. With one hand I pull it up and set the pin anchor. Resume fighting the fish and it begins ripping off tons of line. I then notice the line is not changing angle (pointing right at the bank). It has me around something and is heading down river! Throw the trolling motor back down and clear the snag easily. Oh no, it is still snagged! Move my way over and the line is cut into an old piece of wood. I’m looking over my shoulder and see the fish rolling on the surface as I’m trying to clear the snag. Everytime I try to pull on the line to grab the snag the fish feels tension and takes off. Finally that is free and now the boat is sitting on bottom on top of the line. Move the boat off the bank and only to clear one more snag. Finally the fish is now clear and I’m shouting like a fool at this point. In the boat and measured at 32"…a tie for my personal best inshore red. I’m a little disappointed, but not for long. What an awesome fight. I could have went home happy right then. Went on to the trout spot and caught about 10 at 14-16". Back home at noon.

Congratulations!! great day on the water!!

congrats! enjoyed the report- felt as if i was right there with you on the boat as everything that could go wrong did. glad there was a happy ending, so to speak.

I was one pins and needles hoping the line didn’t part, but thankfully there are no oysters or barnacles in the area. I definitely had some luck though. Rod was a self built 7’ high modulus graphite blank rated at 8-15# with a Battle 2000 and 15# braid which make for a good fight to begin with. Next time I go back to the spot I will probably bring a heavier casting rod.

That sounds freakin awesome!! Just curious, if there are no oysters/barnacles in the area, what brings the redfish there?

There are some oysters here and there, but they do not stick the submerged timber. If I had to guess, the stumps and logs are pine and or live oak. It is interesting because the nearest dry land that supports trees is easily a half mile away. Maybe the dredging of the ICW was the doom of this area of trees or maybe it is much older; ancient maybe. To answer your question of what brings the reds there is bait and structure. There are some of people I have met that will not fish the Stono b/c they have never caught anything of consequence. For me it is just the opposite. I have put a lot of time into fishing the Stono. To me, it is one of the best places to catch large reds.

Interesting. Yeah my buddy lives on bohicket creek. On the bank on one side of his dock has like an old line of roots. Underneath his dock there’s poster’s. I fish the roots when the tides up with a cork, I catch trout and whiting along it. Underneath the dock there is a sheepshed that steals m bait. Strangely though I have never caught a redfish there. even fished halted blue crab under other dock around with zero success. Hooked up a 7’ blacktoip on his dock. Bohicket is full of eating sized shrimp right now, don’t tell bonzo!
I to have put have put some good hours on the stink with very limited success. Although I fish it below wappoo cut. I actually fish the kiawah river a lot. My favorite spot on the water is on it, and several other good spots. Everybody is suprised when I tell them I fish there.

No, no, no…Iain what are you doing!!! There’s no stinking redfish in the Stono/wadmallaw area! don’t be telling people that there’s large reds out there!!!

Knowing the fish are there is one thing, catching them is another:wink:

Sounds like a good day, might even get stono fishing again
