Stono at Sol legare landing

Anybody ever put a kayak in here and fished the stono or the nearby creeks? Toying with the idea of it this weekend and was wondering if it was a good idea or a waste of my time. Trying to find a place nearby my house to launch easily and catch some fish.

Any advice would be appreciated…

Adam

Just be sure to totally empty out your car and leave windows down in the parking lot, otherwise you will find them smashed out and anything inside stolen. Some pretty bad “elements” hang there a lot. Better off going to Folly and launching there.

What Russ said… I have launched there once wiht a buddy and it did not look like a place I wanted to be escpecially alone…

3x. Not a place that you want to leave anything valuable! A buddy tie up there earlier this year when he had mechanical issues and caught a ride back to Folly to get his truck. When he returned, the boat was all but stripped bare.

I have put in there over a hundred times in the last 5 or so years and have never had a problem…on second thought, it’s very scary and dangerous stay away.

Well, you can make up your own mind farmdawg, but take a look at the places and people along sol legare rd as you drive down there and unless your driving a 70’s era gremlin or pacer or packin some serious heat ya might want to just head a few more miles down folly rd to the ramp there. Lot better fishing in the Folly as well compared to the Stono, IMO.

Well Ive got some serious heat in my truck for anybody that messes with me…while im in the truck…but that wont help me much if i’m out in the water fishin…

I ts very deceiving because at the end of the road by the landing there are several million dollar homes with nice boats and vehicles, but im assuming that nobody is messing with them or they would move…

Thanks for the advice guys…

In college I lived in Riverfront subdivision across folly Rd from Sol Legare Rd. I used the landing all the time. One weekday I came back to the Sol Legare ramp after a morning trip. My truck had been broken into so I called the sheriff. They came down and took my report and said 3 other trucks had been hit too. Out of the four trucks they stole 3 hand guns. That morning their earning potential increased exponentially.

Farmdawg,
I’ve launched there a number of times without any problems but I’ve always had a nagging worry about what I’d find when I came back. I’d do it again though. (2000 outback. Maybe not enticing enough?)
I usually try to launch at dawn on an outgoing tide and ride it down to the mouth of the Stono. It’s about a one hr paddle. There’s good spots along that route at this time of year at least. There’s a lot of oyster beds along the banks that can be productive.

Let’s not arm any more thieves by leaving handguns in our trucks. Take em with you or lock em up where they can’t get em. If that’s too hard, leave them at home.

Good point Chuck. Traveling from Cola, I usually have a gun in the car. Never leave it in the truck for just that reason.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the cars being targeted have expressions of their "heritage" on them.

A truck left at a rural boat ramp with a heritage flag on it says, “Gun in the glove box. I’m fishing for at least 5 hours so, please take your time stealing my hand guns”.

Had one stolen several years back in Mississippi so now I lock mine up tight or leave it at home. Those things are expensive to replace!

No. They are free at any of our local boat ramps. Everybody knows that trucks at boat ramps have guns in the glove box.

If I’m carrying a piece,it’s for me and not my vehicle to protect itself. Vehicle windows = 0, Me alive = 1, bad guys if I have my piece = -1. Seriously, if I think a piece may come in handy I would find a different spot. A fish is not worth the stress of life/limb/property. Launch somewhere else.
Just my $.02.

Yeah I’d rather paddle a long way from a good launch than have my car un-detailed by the neighborhood “welcoming committee”.

Thinking about it, it is pretty seedy at Copahee, Garris, Paradise,Bushy Park and Station 26 for that matter. Don’t use these ramps, it wouldn’t be safe!!! Think of your families and don’t fish these areas!!!

You left out Remley Point, Buck Hall and Shem Creek.

Sorry, all of those are extremely unsafe landings as well. Best bet would have to be Wappoo Cut

Better yet - don’t fish any local waters/creeks/landings/lakes/beaches/ponds/impoundments/rivers…
