Stono inlet negative tides

The path I was taking out to the ocean is no good during low/negative tides. I saw this article and was going to see if this way is still good. http://www.atlanticboatandmarine.com/NewsArticles/StonInl_000000.htm

I was in the inlet fishing on Saturday at low tide and I saw someone in a pretty big offshore boat cruise on through out of sight. Either he sank or there is a better way than I have. I try to avoid the breaker area at low tides but if a storm comes rolling in when I am out and need a go fast to outrun the storm route, I would like to have one. Thanks

That appears pretty close to the way we’ve been running. Still gets a little shallow at dead low, but passable. Which way have you been going? Cutting in front of Bird Key?

that article is 2 years old…I would be very cautious…

I have heard of people cutting up between bird key and folly but I never tried it. It always looks like high waves through there. I guess if I had a water spout chasing me, I might give it a go.

Bonso- I saw that was 2 years old and that’s why I am hoping to get a little more current info. I put everything in my GPS last night and thier route is North of what my breadcrumb trail was showing. I don’t really like going through there but its way further to go any other way except for the lighthouse inlet and I never went through there. I hate Wappoo because of the traffic.

Don’t go between folly and bird key. The channel through it is ridiculous. Nexft big negative take your boat and look around, whole sandbar is exposed all the way to the bouys

Just pick your way around the breakers. I’ve never seen less than 4.0 on the sounder so not likely to actually hit bottom. This season I’ve found better water toward the green bouy. Don’t be too freaked when you’re > 1 mile out and see 4-5 feet again as you clear the outer bar. Ignore this advice if you drive a 60’ sporty.

Maybe soon we’ll have another island hang out spot out there.

Negative low tide should honestly be one of the easiest times to get out the stono b/c the breakers are very well defined. If you head very south on your way out you should be clear of the breakers and have no problems. Seeing the breakers on low water will clearly show you the best gap in between them. I do in the dark all the time and i hug Kiawah more than in years past

I was out last Saturday and was poking around by the breakers. All I could see was a huge wall of waves all around, no openings. I would have gotten closer (1/4mi away or more) but I had my kids and an inexperienced friend with me. I didn’t want to get in a bad situation.

This weekend I am gonna give her a shot. I want to try some trolling for some Spanish or whatever other toothy fish that likes a clarkspoon.

Going out if you hang a right at the green buoy and then after a while staighten up it’s decent. I guess the 1-S buoy isn’t going to be replaced. I think the Coast Guard is trying to tell us not to use Stono. As for the west end of Folly I use that as a shortcut but only on an incoming or dead high tide on a nice day. Any more the lighthouse inlet seems easier than Stono but it’s a touch farther for me to go that way.

I understand there is a new “channel” cut where the sandbars used to be before Irene…just past the Coast Guard station then head towards the lighthouse…don’t have to go so far out now to begin that move to the North…still shallow, but navigable in very calm seas…

I actually thought of trying the lighthouse inlet some time. I have never tried it, I have always been told that it can’t be done unless its high tide. I may try it on a incoming tide that is pretty low so I won’t have to wait too long to float off a sandbar if I get hung up. I would like to chart a good route through there. If there was safe passage it would knock 5 miles off the trip to CHS 60.

I tried to go out the Stono Sunday but it was really rough. I don’t know how big the swells were but it was a little more than I was comfortable with.

my track line coming into stono inlet from 4ki was good in june, its not good now, First time coming back, the seas were rough and when i saw breaking waves where my track line said i should be headed,i just figured the seas were making it that way, went around the breakers and got in just fine, few days later, i came that way again and this time it was a flat calm day,the breakers were still there, it changed in a couple of months. Its doable but you have to plot it on a calm day not when its rough.
