Stono River

Any good spots on the Stono river on the West Ashley/Johns Island side of the Wappoo Cut?

are you asking about wappoo down towards Kiawah or Wappoo towards Wadmallaw?

There are many places to fish between the cut and Limehouse ramp. Numerous docks, creeks etc.

I live on the river the section between the Limehouse bridge and the bridge from James Island to Johns Island on Maybank. What bait/artificials should I use during this time of year in a small creek? Trout, reds, flounder I don’t care, I just want to catch something. Just got a fishing kayak so I’ll be staying in the smaller creeks

On the WA side of the river, try where Coburg creek meets Stono. There are a lot of flats in that area, but try the mouth and up in the creek. If you find them there, they will be in similar other places. Use plastic on jig heads ( the advice on which ones will run the gamut, just try them till something works), and make a slowwww retrieve so that it rides just at the bottom…

Marker 28 (I think that’s it), just down from Limehouse landing, there’s a large creek that goes back towards Croghan’s landing. THere’s several creek mouths that you can try for trout. Then way at the back of that creek are lots of shell banks that you can try as well.

I live near Edgewater/Capri back there on the Stono and went again today for a few hours. No luck. I may try to put it in off the edgewater bridge and try Coburg Creek. Hopefully my luck will change!

And has anyone ever fished Long Branch Creek in west Ashley county park?

Its a tough area. I live on Coburg Creek and have been putting in plenty of effort on the near-Stono for the past year.

My best results are either weighted hooks with ZMan Scented ShrimpZ or JigHeads (Trouteyes have nice weight) with minnowz or streakz. I’ve given up live bait completely, with the exception of the occasional cast net throw to snag some shrimps or soaking some mullet on a circle hook while watching the sun set.

Troll the banks (if you’re paddling, just let the current pull you along) and look for structure (rocks, shells, pilings) to cast near. Also the small creek-mouths across from Wappoo Road can produce. Sept-Dec are the best months for trout, but they’re still biting (though I only got 4 today). Sorry to say it, but don’t waste your time in Coburg Creek :(. I’ve gotten some trout over by the dairy but nothing on the Wappoo Road end.

If you’re looking for a sleigh ride go fish the signs by the cut. Just don’t do that on a weekend in your kayak or you’ll get killed to death by wakes.

Good luck. Say hi if you see me out there, 17’ whaler being driven by a 5 year old yellow lab.

Thanks Al, I’m sure I’ll be seeing you out there soon. Hopefully things will start going my way!
