Stono Slammin

Moved to James Island last month, took the boat out for the first time today on the Stono river. Pulled in 6 trout on a popping cork and DOA shrimp.

Nothing special, but reading this forum got me out there and feeling confident, so thank you.

I’d like to better understand how to work a jig head. Slow, slow, slow, I know…but am I looking to continuously reel at a slow pace or let it sit and then reel?

Just lift the tip and let it bounce along. Tap tap drop the tip tighten the line and set the hook.

It depends on what profile you are throwing. On a paddle tail, reel slow and give it a little action with the tip of your rod. Make sure you feel bottom every so often as if you reel to fast the drag of the tail will raise it in the water column. Jerk shads or TT’s will sink quickly. Just give very small but sharp twitches with your wrist to make it hop along the bottom. Make sure the end of your rod is not moving more than 1 ft. This will be a lot less than you think I bet!
