Everyone needs to raise hell about the Hollywood pump station pumping 4 millions gallons of sewage into the Stono River. Supposedly the city told those morons the flow was reduced and instead of investigating they recalibrated the gauges. Everyone involved needs to be fired. What about all the crabbers and oystermen. Who’s paying them. Complete incompetence on behalf of some jerk offs has led to this. How long will it take for all that **** to flush and remember when it does it flushes right out to our ocean. They should make all those workers in charge swim on a pool of **** for a couple days!
From DHEC: “Oysters being recalled were harvested from parts of Charleston Harbor south to the North Edisto River between Feb. 19 and Feb. 28.” How in the hell do you recall oysters that were harvested two weeks ago? You can’t…someone already ate them.
Interesting that they don’t mention the potential detrimental effects to the entire marine ecosystem from this kind of thing…

What also never seems to get addressed are all the old homes that are grandfathered in and running leach fields in our marshes and Grey water pipes dumping in creeks.
This ain’t a new thing happening… Cracker Larry “God rest his soul” fussed about run off, sewage spills, fertilizer from golf courses and developments flowing into the creeks and rivers to little or no avail…Until the fishermen , oyster/crab , and comm. fishermen in said areas hold the politicians and developers feet to the fire and their faces in the same shat that they allow to pollute our waters nothing is going to happen to make it better…

guess we should be glad that 98% of the white shrimp were killed in the Jan cold snap…shrimp love $^&*…and yes, it chaps my a$$ too that they’re just like, “oh, sorry our pipes are leaking, y’all get your oysters from somewhere else”…

Agree with Billsstew! I live on the Stono just past the Riviera on the right heading south and fish there all the time. Now my fun days of Spring fishing are done. Love watching the crabbers everyday pull in their catch but no more! The conditions those guys work in isn’t easy but they do it for us who love our Lowcountry Crabs! What about Ravanel Seafood and The Fish Net? Now they have to pay higher prices from another State then pass it on to us! C’mon Man!! Hollywood!! Get your %$#t together!!

Hope ya’ll don’t think the crabbers stopped pulling from those waters. Hate to tell you but that isn’t the case. But like timnates said, those guys bust their @$$ for us to enjoy some lowcountry crabs and yes, Hollywood needs to get their s#!t together.
Oysters were closed because they are filter feeders and remove particulates and microorganisms from the water. Some of those microbes are pathogens that can potentially cause disease if consumed alive. Crabs are not affected because they are 1. cooked and 2. the meat you eat does not become infected with the microbes. Likewise, finfish are mostly affected if the release causes an increase in BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) resulting in low dissolved oxygen not able to sustain the fish. Back in the “Good old days”, all sewage was released untreated directly into Charleston Harbor and about every other stream/river in the state. Things do break but it is much better today than pre 1970’s.

Yes, the information sharing about this has serious issue been rather poor which is concerning. SCDNR home page doesn’t even acknowledge the problem at all, but you can subscribe to S.C. Wildlife Magazine.

There’s no end in sight for our tiny little ecosystem. Our politicians have given the approval for up to 6000 homes and apartments in the Long Savannah area off of Bees Ferry. When asked about run-off and drainage they replied that excess run-off and drainage will be diverted into Rantowles Creek which dumps into the Stono. All that car smudge, fertilizer, pesticides. WTH,?
Ever wonder why you don’t see as many oysters in that area? It’s because there is not enough water volume exchanged during the tides. It’s stagnant compared to other major rivers in our area. What does that mean for us fisherfolks? Living and fishing in a cesspool created by poor regulations and political hand greasing. It’s pretty pathetic when you think about it.

one could start by letting your representatives know that you don’t approve of trump’s plans to eviscerate the EPA, the federal agency that oversees these types of environmental catastrophes. Eliminating regulations just allows more of these events to occur without punishment.
ST ; won’t argue that point , but i’ve never seen the epa do anything but just make matters worse on what ever they got their fingers into… I had much rather see all reps involved in allowing such from happening be put on instant recall and the perpertrators arrested and sentenced to physically assist in cleaning it up for the entire duration of effects of said contamination and then banned for life fron any position that could ever cause any type of pollution…JUST MY THOUGHTS!!!

At the risk of sending this thread into the politics section…I guess you would like to see trump here helping with the clean-up…
"To date, the Trump administration has sought to reverse more than 60 environmental rules, according to a New York Times analysis, based on research from Harvard Law School’s Environmental Regulation Rollback Tracker, "

I can easily see Trump personally help clean up such a mess long before any of the perpertrators or politicians pitchin in…
