Stono trout

54 trout today.Water temp 59 clear to 3 feet,Morning Glory also the white with chartreuse tail.Maybe 3 keepers out of the bunch. Most 13.5 inches.Left them biting.

Yeah that’s what I found in the stono three trips in a row. I could not find good numbers of 14+ inch trout. Out of. 75 maybe 5-7 were over 14.

I havn’t been able to find nowhere near these numbers but the ones i have found have been descent sizeed trout. All mine have came on the 2.5" zman paddle tail goldenboy

I’m losing it over here. I think I may be the worst fisherman in Charleston sometimes. I see these reports and am impressed, but by no means do I expect to be catching 50+ fish. However, in my mind I keep thinking I’ll catch 5-10 someday. I just suck. I spent yesterday on the Stono with the same luck as I always have: none. I trolled up and down both sides of river and creeks and I stopped and fished a couple of areas. The whole trip and I caught 1 trout. He was about 9 inches. I’ve ready everything on this site, I’m using the same tackle that I’m reading here and I’m trying different techniques. Any ideas how people can be regularly catching as many fish as many of you are and I can’t come home with 1 fish to eat?

In case anyone’s curious:
I fished above Limehouse landing
Trolled along grass lines 3-3.5 mph
Trolled some below 3 mph after getting no bites
Trolled along grass on Stono some, trolled a lot in creeks along grass
20 lb. braid on my rods with small swivels and 18"-24" mono leaders
Red, yellow & white jig heads with curly tail grub, 3" paddle tail and 4" jerk shad
The 1 trout was caught casting and not trolling. Zero more bites after the one catch.

To the West. Towards Wadmalaw. Near Rantowles Creek.

Have you tried the docks near the golf course? We had luck there on the incoming tide. Then there are a few oyster banks that come off of the grass, perpendicular, in Wadmalaw sound just as it opens up after leaving the river, on the right side. We’ve caught trout there on the back side of the beds as the tide is coming in, over the top of the shells. I think the shell banks are just passed the range markers on the right side. It’s been a while since I’ve been there but I think that’s right.

I haven’t tried there, sea tonic. Thanks for the advice.

Stonoman, sorry for hijacking your thread. I love reading your reports as well as your, Clemsontrout. I just kind of went on a rant this morning. Been struggling figuring out how to catch trout.

Near Lime house the best spots I know of are rantowles creek, by the train track or peter millers are both good, certain times of the year you can catch stripers there too and all the docks by the wappoo cut. Rantowles has a ton of structure in the water by peter millers so be careful. Also the creek that runs right next to the bridge on maybank is a good creek. You can troll a small creek like that and know that you didn’t miss them they just weren’t there, 1 to 1.5 is supposed to be a good speed and swimming baits that you don’t have to work for them to have action are go tos. Try minnows under a popping cork its simplier than working a lure, you may be doing it wrong, small things can be the difference of 3 and 30 fish. If you catch small trout 17< then you found a school, the big ones fly solo more often then the little ones. I fish the stono by Kiawah and Folly and don’t catch fish under slot, in the back creeks the schools range from 10 to 20 inches, really mixed but I think it is because this is the main feeding spot in the river for the tide I fish and everything gathers there.

Moral kiosk…I grew up here and have put thousands of hours in on the water, and I still learn every time. In my reports it’s also vague. I fished the stono out of limehouse three times recently and haven’t been there in years. I caught one trout in ab 2.5 hours while exploring. I tried some things that have been working elsewhere and they clearly weren’t working. I switched it up found some fish and caught maybe 10-15 trout and a red in the next hour. They were all on one bank. I could use what I learned that trip and apply it the next two times since all three occurred within an 8 day period. The second trip I went out I fished up rantowles past Peter Miller and trussel. I fished the ENTIRE length of rantowles and caught three Trout no reds. Granted one of the trout was over 20 inches but three hours or so and three fish. After that I went back to what worked the trip before and caught ab 30-40 trout and a redfish. All the trout were small. Pm me and maybe I can help
