Long story short, I will be leaving the country for a two year assignment early next year. I just bought a 13ft Whaler with a 1997 2stroke 25hp Johnson in January and I’d rather not sell it. Am going over the different options in my mind, and I am considering just storing it. Is there a good way to prepare the motor for sitting two years without being run?

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
Crank it on a hose in the yard, fog the engine and when you’re done, drain the bowls on the carbs. Then pull out the spark plugs and spray some fogging oil into the cylinders and replace the spark plugs. Make sure all the water is out of the lower unit and also change the lower unit oil, just in case there may be a little water trapped in with the oil.
Store it in a dry place out of the weather and you should be fine.

Drain/clean carbs
Remove the spark plugs and put a SMALL amount of oil in the cylinders.
Turn it over a few times to spread the oil around.
Put sparkplugs back in.
Remove the battery from the boat.
Replace lower unit oil.
Empty gas tank

What kind of storage were you thinking? Inside a building? Controlled Environment? If you leave this thing under a tarp it’s going to look like hell when you get back. Probably have all kinds of critters living in it.
24 months of storage at $100+ a month. Is it worth it? Why not just buy again when you get back? 13ft Whalers usually arent hard to find.
mix double 2 stroke oil in a small can and run the engine about 10 minutes on the double mix
disconnect the fuel line and let it run out of fuel
change gear lube
remove battery and fuel tank

This was one of my thoughts also. I can find cheaper storage, but probably can't find covered storage even that cheap. Not to mention that a 2yr assignment might turn into longer.

My wife and I have done quite a few short-term missions and decided we wanted to try something longer term. So we are quitting our jobs, selling the house, putting stuff in storage and planning to take off in January.

Sell it! Not worth the storage fees to let it sit out in the sun and bake for 2 years with no attention.
