Can trout be stored in the freezer? I have always been told that it would not last in the freezer since the meat was so soft.

I don’t see how that helps to answer the question.
Goob- I have tried freezing two trout filets on two occasions - one in vaccuum bag and one in a bag of salt + water. Neither one had very favorable results compared to fresh, but either would have been fine for a fish fry.
while I choose to eat fish fresh I will freeze trout in water…makes for a fine fish taco during those cold ass winter months when you can’t get on the water…as long as you will eventually eat it then why not freeze it…that’s my motto…

I just cut the head off, gut them and then freeze them in a bag. Never have had a problem doing this. Don’t notice much difference in the taste from one fresh, small if any.
scale, fillet and rinse well…put in baggie with some water… squeeze out excess and freeze. Not sure how long it lasts, never kept any longer than several months in the freezer
yes you can freeze it

Would you throw back grouper because you could not eat in next 2-3 days?

I freeze it, tastes just as good to me.
I do as said above, head and gut. I leave the scales on. When I thaw, I finish filleting and then I skin it with the scales intact.
Texture changes mildly but the flavor is OK. Sure as heck beats having wasted trout if something keeps you from eating them fresh.
Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.
I freeze them both in water and vacuum seal if I will eat sooner. I like to take my filets…put a piece of wax paper on top and roll It up to vacuum seal so the paper is to the outside…seems to keep better. I also roll them for freezing in water. Can take each individual roll and put in sandwich bag with a little water… Stand them all up in larger container to freeze…then can take them out individually as you need them. We don’t keep a lot of inshore fish either since we do get to fish a good bit…but I love to keep a redfish for fish stew on a cold winter day…like today.

I freeze them in freezer bags, covered with water (brine), and they are fine. My father always used a half-gallon milk carton and just stapled the top closed… never frozen for long anyway.
My parents did too! Lol. We didn’t know about sealers and plastic containers back then. Milk cartons and butter bowls.

Milk cartons were plentiful because she would buy a case or two of milk from the commissary and (yes) froze it. Besides, the stand or pack well in the freezer.
I vacuum seal almost everything including trout and they do very well as far as being firm and tasting good.
Vacuum seal works best for me, storing in water makes the meat a bit mushy.
Local Boy, Just having fun.
Thanks everyone. I just went back to this post tonight. After the first response, I thought I had asked a stupid question.
I rarely keep fish and when I do I don’t eat them the same day that I catch them. I never kept trout that I did not give away to someone to eat fresh for not thinking they could be stored.

There is nothing wrong with freezing fish. Fillet…put in freezer bag with water…as you zip lock it push out all the air. Never had a problem with meat getting mushy or any loss of taste. Thats just me
I just gut and cut the head off and put in a freezer bag without any water in it. Try to get to the fish within a couple of months but have used ones frozen longer than that. Never noticed much difference in taste this way either. I sure there are a few ways to do it that work fine.
