stranded...

Just thought I would speak my mind a little on the way my girl friend and I were treated last Sunday at Morris Island. I made a very bad decision and left my boat anchored at an area behind Morris Island that I thought to be a safe spot. Long story short the tide came in as I new it would but I didn’t have a clue, so would breaking surf. My boat was swamped, sunk! I secured it best i could and found a couple of good ole boys (complete a-holes) out in the water about 75 yards and asked them for some help. Now mind you it was just me and my girlfriend left on that island. They (and this is important) were in a 17 flats boat that with A 90 Yamaha on the back. I asked them to please give us a ride back to Folly landing which may have taken them 30 minutes to do and they told me NO! That we might sink his boat. Then they proceeded to pull up anchor and leave us alone, stranded. I did leave them with some parting adjectives…Some one else later on came by and took us to safety. Hope these two have a real bad boating life

That’s disturbing.

SOooo,What happened to your boat???..I always carry a 5 gallon bucket and spare portable bilge pump…

Just curious why they thought their boat would sink??? Now those guys are who we need a photo of!!! If something bad had happened to you and your girlfriend ,well could be considered criminal negligence…

I have helped many stranded boats in my lifetime...and been helped a couple times..

Shame on them!!!

There’s no way that I condone what the guys in flats boat did. I, and you, don’t really know why they did what they did. However, I do think that you need to take some responsibility for what happened or at least understand that it was a learning experience. I’m sure you were concerned about what would happen to you. But, you need to always keep an eye on your boat when you’re anchored at an island. Carry your cell phone with you in case of emergencies of any kind. Have a membership with a marine towing company. When you’re out on the water you can only rely on yourself. “be prepared” for any contingency that you can think of. I hope that your boat is recovered and that everything works out.

Must have been liberals, nothing in it for them. (A** holes)! Hope it comes back on them 10 fold.

The man did take responsibility for the situation he found himself in, he freely admitted he made a bad decision. Recognizing the fact that he made a bad decision tells me that he has already taken a lesson from it. Blackhawk, do you really believe people who suffer from a liberal point of view are actually more likely to be a-holes than otherwise? If so you’re delusional, there are plenty of a-holes on both sides of that fence. The fact is, regardless of how they choose to vote if someone refuses to help a fellow boater in distress they don’t deserve to be on the water. Sea Dude, welcome to the site and if you’re new to it, life on the water as well. Believe me when I tell you that most folks you will encounter on the water in the low country, especially those who are members of CF, are good upstanding people who are most always willing to help those in need if it is within there ability to do so. Now please tell us how you got off Morris and what happened to your boat.

Looks to me like he is taking responsibility.

It’s a shame people wouldn’t help you. I’d go out of my way to help any boater in distress.

I think they did you wrong if they knew your boat was swamped and you were in a very bad spot with a damaged boat.

My confessional is that I’ve seen boaters stranded on mud flats all the time and I’ve gone past them. They’ve run their boats in shallow water and gotten stuck and were victims of the outgoing tide. You know that in a few hours the tide will float them off the mud/bank and they’ll be on their way, not much worse for wear other than a large chunk of embarrassment.

I’ve also had friends that were stuck on mud flats and they have another boater give them a 6 pack of beer to enjoy while they waited for the tide to float them.

There is a lesson for everyone on this. We use our boats in fickle waters where sometimes we need to have help. If someone is in need of help because of an emergency (I’d call a swamped boat on a barrier island an emergency), you give them help. When you see someone stuck on a mud flat, given them a hard look to make sure they are OK or will be OK when the tide returns.

I think the biggest shame is all the other boaters than were probably around and saw that your boat was in imminent peril of being swamped and no one tried to move your boat to a safer anchorage.

Finally, get a Spot www.findmespot.com so you can summons help and get a Sea Tow or Boat US membership to save us from ourselves when we do crazy things or have a mechanical breakdown.

karma is rough on the water

We were fishing on a creek behind sullivan’s yesterday. We had stopped to talk to a family setting up to fish as we went past them. About that time here comes a cabin cruiser with twin engines(had a diver flag on the side) flying by in a fairly narrow creek to be hauling it that fast with other boats there. I guess they didn’t realize that the sailboat anchored in the middle of the creek was stuck in the mud and that the incoming tide had just covered up the mud flat to one side…hahahahaha that’s funny right there. I would have helped you out if I was there and I’d expect anyone else to do the same as long as it didn’t put them at risk.

Seadude,
How many Ohio State flags/stickers were on your boat?

That sucks they left you out there.

Sounds like the same guys that, as they passed me about 50 yards away, looked over at the cowling off my motor (me pointing at the motor and shrugging my shoulders) they just looked at each other, talked, then proceeded to go full throttle and leave the area. This is all with me 300 yards from the landing (a 5 minute tow). Ended up waiting for SeaTow about 3 hours cause they were tied up with a sailboat outside the jetties. Some people just don’t believe in helping their fellow man/woman!! Thankfully most are not like that.

So what happened to the boat?

Annoy a Liberal, Work Hard and Be Happy!

Unfortunately those types are out there…but the majority are good pple. I had a boat flag me down when I was on a quick trip a few years ago…they needed a tow back to paradise isl…i was near dunes west…told them to sit tight, I needed to put more gas then I’ll come back and get them…the majority on here and on the water have been helped before (including myself)…and most of us would go out of our way to help a boater in a bind…sorry that happened to you…that being said, sea tow is good water insurance
