I saw a “square grouper” once. Actually it was round and wrapped in thin green plastic wrap. About 2 ft in diameter and 3 ft long, Birds had torn the top of the plastic open, so there was no doubt what it was. I just looked and moved on. Didn’t want to get involved with this sort of thing!
Caught a baracuda with a plastic 6 pack holder around his body. he must have swam into it when he was small and he just grew around it. he was about 15 # when he was caught and gafed him thru the plastic. Have seen yellowfins breaking 360 deg. around the boat to the horizon years ago in Costa Rica!
Several years ago I was out with Captain Charlie and Robert Willis on the Tide Down, when we came across a Blue crashing a school of mostly peanut dolphin. Most incredible thing I had seen… Attached is one picture, there are more on his website.
I was also on the boat for that trip. Absolutely amazing sight that the pictures, while amazing, don’t do the occasion justice.
Aside from that, I was running the boat back in one day and came across a school of Rays as far as the eye could see in either direction from the bridge. Pulled back and just sat there for several minutes.
Half way between Key Largo and Cuba. Thank God it was empty.
Dear Lord, Grant me the Serenity to accept the size of the fish I catch, the Courage not to lie about it, and the Wisdom to know that none of my fishing buddies would believe me anyway…
One night while swordfishing, we hooked up a hammerhead 7-8’ maybe… As we pulled him up under the hydro glow light, a large blue torpedo came up, circled him one time, and charged into him. Line popped just after that… Scary thing is, the mako was at least a foot shorter. Just goes to show, they are the scariest thing in the ocean no matter what size you are.
100lb YFT jumping like mullet in the gulf near some oil rigs. On a different trip we were fishing near a drilling ship and the tuna were chasing flying fish in the underwater lights. It was like an aquarium. The biggest one we landed that night was 180lbs and we broke off a few that were much larger. It’s insane how strong the fish are.
Last week, running along beach in about 30’, saw maybe 12 pods of rays, with 7 to 30 in each group. They were all the same size, about 2’ across, and brown. All ended north so probably migrating. With all these along my course, probably many more out there too.
Good question. Amazing you can still see new stuff after so many years.
