This could be an entertaining thread. Care to share what the most interesting or the coolest thing you’ve seen in your offshore adventures?
I still get tickled every time I see a sunfish out there. To me, the entire experience is awesome.
Strangest thing I have ever seen was 23sailfish trying to molest a sunfish…
They like to be tickled!!!

What do you think got them so tickled?

This is my coolest as well. While not that big, but certainly over 10ft.

Coolest: The look on my son’s face the first time I took him offshore and him taking in all of the cool stuff. The other for me is back in the day seeing huge schools of yellowfin tuna busting flying fish all around the boat.
Strangest: Skinneej and 23Sailfish “swimming” with sunfish
in the few times i’ve been offshore, the coolest was catching a cobia off the back of an est 14 foot tiger. But no matter how many times I go, I just love seeing flying fish.

Since you mentioned flying fish. We were sword fishing one night and picked up lines to run back to where we started and I got pelted by a flying fish. Pitch black out running fast and that thing just drilled me. Couldn’t figure out for the life of me what happened. Actually thought a weight broke off. Got back and hit the spreader lights and their she was half dead flipping around on the deck. Was like a punch in the chest. Still makes me laugh.

I was a kid fishing with my dad and his friends. We hooked a peanut mahi-mahi.
It was skimming the surface and a marlin exploded on him.
A couple minutes into the fight, he spit the mahi-mahi out. It looked like road kill.
Tail section of an aircraft floating about 40 miles off Charleston. Notified Coast Guard. It was from a fighter jet that went down off of Myrtle Beach. When we came back in, the Coasties were retrieving it.

If 8 miles is offshore then I’d have to say flying fish and dolphins (Mahi) darting under the boat in brilliant blue water down in the Keys. Only been off our shore once and saw a 10-12’ hammerhead cruising the surface.

Giant tiger shark munching down on a chunk of whale blubber. Bad arse

Bft 45, Right whale with calf. Cool to me, but having my son on board at the age of 12 made it epic!
10’ hammerhead cruising the top way offshore. Man-a-war as well.

I found a large tiger shark eating a massive sea turtle once. I’ve found lots of weird stuff floating offshore including a kiddie pool in perfect condition fully inflated about 25 miles off the Virgin Islands. Also found a fully inflated lazy river type float from a resort in Mexico while I was offshore in the Keys once.
Saw a large nurse shark swimming just under a weed line in 1500’ just off of Woods Wall about 20 miles offshore of Big Pine Key.
While I see plenty of humpback whales in the Spring in the USVI, I have sometimes seen them breach and come completely out of the water. I saw it often while fishing in Alaska but it’s cool to see them in the warm water of the Caribbean.
I had a triple knockdown on blue marlin and landed two of them. It was pretty wild to see three blue marlin jumping while hooked up at the same time till one got off.

A Marlin free jumping at sunrise.
About 30 schoolies jumping in unison… all gulf stream blue…and a juvenile marlin swimming around with one stuck on his/her bill and trying to shake it down to its mouth.
A 60# bull dolphin come in and take a swimming mullet bait from a marlin that was slapping at it.
A baby sail fish that got hung on a stinger hook with a blue runner that was bigger. It would have fit on a dollar bill.
My son and daughter rigging/watching baits out the back of our boat.
I thank the Creator every day for these things and so much more.
Coolest thing thus far was a huge school of bottle nose. Started with a few surfing our wake then off the bow then we looked up and well over 100 where breaking the surface jumping out the water. Then just like that they were gone and we didn’t catch crap the rest of the day LOL.

Several years ago I was out with Captain Charlie and Robert Willis on the Tide Down, when we came across a Blue crashing a school of mostly peanut dolphin. Most incredible thing I had seen… Attached is one picture, there are more on his website.
