How far back do you have to run them to get them to 25’ going 2.5 mph. Does anyone know of a chart to calculat there depth?
steelytom
Usually there is a chart inside the container that the lure comes in. I don’t believe it gives speed, but I think it will reach 25’ with 30# mono at around 150 feet of line out. I use these all the time in lake moultrie. I even use the stretch 30. Of course, it is pretty hard to get on the lake now:frowning_face:

Well hopefully we get some of the rain thats predicted. Rain should aso hit north, which will help send water down the wateree. Although all the lakes before moutrie may suck up all the water for themselves. I have seen the pictures, looks bad. On a positive note, all that grass should make for good cover. Bait fish populations should go up.

Down here in moultrie, myself and most people I talk to, use the lures with the red head and pearl bodies. The striper really like the extra loud and noisy ones also. I stagger my lines at different lengths to reach different depths. If the fish are down deep, I’ll use a 2oz egg sinker and a 3’ to 4’ leader to get the lure down deeper without having to put out so much more line.

I’m looking forward to the overnight temps in the 30’s and 40’s, that’s usually when the action gets hot (water temp in the mid 50’s). Plus, at those temps, there is not much competition. There is alot of fair weather fishermen around here that do not know what they are missing.

I know what you mean. Last winter I had the lake to myself a lot of days. Especially if I went out on a weekday. It seems like when we get a nice calm days in December and january I get sick and can’t get to work. Nothing like hitting the lake in the morning and being the first person out and the lake is like a sheet of glass. Being from Pittsburgh, the coldest days here are nice days there.
I don’t like the cold, even around here. I dress for the occasion though. The way I see it, if you’re not there when the fish are in the mood, then you have zero chance of catching them. People that know me, say that I’d rather fish than eat. They’re probably right. My wife doesn’t care for my passion so much. I always joke that the only thing that would ever split my wife and I up would be a fish. My wife has been in a better mood with the lake being down and all (keeping me from my allnighters on the lake). I still have been bass fishing lately with my father on his boat in the canal below the lake.

The striper caught down here do not seem to be as big as they used to be. This one was close to 35". I caught it last year a couple of nights before Christmas. The night before, I was by myself and caught 14 in less than 90 minutes including 2 doubles, which is fun when you’re by yourself navigating around the dam and the walls. Luckily, the 9 I had to throw back seemed to swim off just fine.

What type of rod are you using to troll a Stretch 25+? Seems like it would have to be 30-40lb capable and something like a cobia rig?
scout,
I use shakespeare ugly stik catfish rods. They are 7’, med. heavy. I use the shakespeare tidewater tw30lb reels. For the money, you can’t beat em’. They work real good trolling and I have caught several 30#-40# blue catfish and a couple 50# flathead trolling with this setup and the strecth 25+. I mainly fish for striper with these rods and reels, but I also bottom fish offshore with them. I have brought in some nice kings and grouper with em’. Like I said, for the money (less than $80 at wally world) you can’t complain.
Also, I use berkley big game 30# green line.

I use the 7’ ugly stick catfish rod as well. But I only use 17#, I just started trolling the last time out and have not had a hit yet. So definitely don’t do what I do. I guess I should probably get something heavier.
Nice fish, Hopefully they start to come back with the stocking. I think they get hammered up here in the Saluda pretty good in the summer. I would imagine that is where the big one try to hide out in the summer.
yeah, all my bigger ones have came in the winter months. Though I did catch some nice ones this summer trolling and using live bait.

The Shakespear Tidewaters are pretty good reels. I picked up four of the T30LA at the Shakespear yard sale last spring for $30 a piece. Good reel for the money.
Sea Hunt

“Whipping Post”
They are good reels. I had a couple of old ones that I replaced this year with the newer version. But, if I only spend $35 on a reel every few years or so, I can live with that, especially with the huge amount that I use them…
