striper fishing near charleston

Hello all, I was wondering where the closest place from charleston is to get on some stripers. I was also wondering if anyone catches decent numbers of stocked stripers in the ashley river.

Thanks

No help on the stripers around chuck town or Ashley river. Have fished Cheasepeake Bay but never caught anything like what i’ve watched video of. I’d ask Phin, sells, maybe 23 sailfish or some of those guys and maybe get a straight answer…maybe.

There are some resident fish in the costal rivers but if I were you I would concentrate on the Santee Cooper Lakes! there has been a lot of work done over the past few years to upgrade the fishing in the lakes. When I was a kid in the early 50’s the striper fishing was spectacular and a 10 fish catch would weigh over 200#! Since then the lake has been overfished and the natural spawn had not gone well. The DNR woke up a few years ago and started stocking more fish, changed the size limit, catch limit and even closed the season during hot weather to help the mortality of returned fish, I am sure the fishery will return soon if the fishermen will obay all the laws!!

The Ashley has some decent numbers of stripers up near magnolia gardens but mostly undersize and of course not in season now. I just bought a little getaway place up near Harry’s Fish Camp on Lake Marion and hope to learn how and where to catch a few come October.

There was a guy who used to post on here about river fishing in Charleston. He would catch some nice ones in the winter. I think it was scsurf(something), but changed it to a kayak name. I tried searching for the posts but the search wasn’t working.

Thanks for all the responses. Ill be down all month and ill try for some stripers if the reds arent biting.

You better not, all the rivers are closed to striped bass fishing until October 1.

Closed meaning you can’t harvest any Striper, but you can catch and release them

Rick anything below I think the Gervais st bridge is completely closed from June-oct. The saluda used to be included in this but logic finally kicked in and they let us catch and release in the saluda. No way a fish is under that much stress when caught in water with a temp in the high 50’s.

You say how do they enforce this??? I dont want to be the one they set an example with…lol…plus i tell people if you really care about your fishery why would you want to try and catch/release in the bodies of water that are closed just to watch your fish float.

Huh - I didn’t realize that … Probably because we never have fished in the rivers … Apologies, I stand (rightfully) corrected …

How far down does that extend? All the way to the Atlantic with the exception of Lakes (and the Saluda)? or are there sections, like from the Murray Dam to Gervais Bridge, where Striper fishing is allowed …

The lower Saluda is the only exception. Everything below there is closed now including lakes Moultrie and Marion.

Rick it doesnt actually say gervais bridge. Think is says something like lower saluda from lake murray dam to the Congaree. .which the gervais bridge is basically were the broad and saluda meet to form the congaree.
