Fished the congaree for the first time ever this morning for stripers from the river walk and managed just one smallmouth. Are the stripers already to far up the saluda? Any help for this beginner would be helpful.

Unfortunatly, it’s illegal to take stipers from the lower Saluda & the Congaree this time of year.
From DNR fishing regs:
“On the lower reach of the Saluda River from June 1st to September 30th, it is unlawful to take or
possess striped bass. Striped bass taken must be returned immediately to the waters from where
it came.”

Yes the stripers are up the Saluda now. Bob is correct but the law will be amended July 1, 2012. Catch and release fishing for stripers will be allowed for the Saluda only after June 1, 2013. Enjoy the smallmouth fishing in the meantime. It is a unique fishery and a welcome one while the striper population recovers.
