We took our Vicar out today and introduced him to striper fishing before he heads back to the Seminary in August to complete his final year of training. For a “crash course”, it couldn’t have gone better, with one exception.
Showed him how to tie a workable knot and how to handle a baitcaster reel (and how to correct any mistakes in handling). He assisted in baiting up and deploying planer boards which we pulled around humps near Bomb. While we marked fish often at 20-30 feet,(he liked the Lowrance Display and saw the value of the I-Pilot)nothing rose to take our bait so after an hour we began downrodding when he caught his first striper, a nice 22 incher. After a couple shorts and some non-aggressive strikes, we set out for greener pastures, seeking out deeper water around a point.
The fish were there, lots of them, and aggressive, even though most were short. Even so, he nearly flipped watching the display go crazy with lots or red and yellow streaks. The triple was even more exciting, and he became adept at passing rods under and over to avoid tangles which answered his earlier question as to how does one keep multiple lines in the water straight.
Ran out of bait at 1130 before it started to get hot which was a good time to quit. I had an opportunity to show and demonstrate everything I wanted to as an introduction into striper fishing. If the fish had been a little bigger, it would have been perfect.
Posted a picture of him with his 23 incher which is his biggest ever fish. Had a great day.
