striper learning mode

my son jeremy and i have been working at figuring out the striper catching technique for the last week or two. we are getting better at it each and every outing. went out last evening and checked out a few spots before heading to some big water out from the dam a good ways. started marking some nice schools. put it on spot lock and caught three or four really nice ones over 27 inches. lost that school and then caught one or so. lost several on breakoffs and spit hooks. ended up by the towers playing with small fish that were suspended in 20 ft . gave it up around 11pm. had a great time with my son and ready to give it another shot in a day or so.

At least you had a good time, that’s all that matters. You may want to back off on your drag if you are having a lot of break offs. Just my .02

I’ve fished with bobby, the drags on his 30 year old Mitchells do not work good enough to stop his 20 year old line from breaking. :face_with_head_bandage: Just kidding bobby, glad you guys are having fun.

Tom; for your info i have new line and new reels. the drag was not the problem the other night. the line was roughed up where it broke. i have feelings. haha

You didn’t think I would let you post about breaking your line without me breaking your balls did you? But you really shouldn’t ever break off a striper in Murray unless it wraps around structure or your motor. Keep that drag loose and if you have a knick or knot in your line, you need to cut it off and re-tie. Nothing worse than watching a monster fish get away at the boat because you didn’t take the few minutes to get your gear right. And I know this from experience.

Tom; it was 6# test on one of my old rods. Thank you very much for your instructions. do not know what i would do without an expert such as you giving me this priceless advice. easy for you to bust me when you are 600+ miles away. come down here and say that . ha ha ha ha. good to talk to you last week. don’t wait so long to come down. i may let you fish in my new boat. it has a washdown hose so i can clean you up before you get in it. take care my good friend.
