I see people daily trolling and using items other than herring. Does anyone know what lures people are trolling and using to catch em other than herring? I know some folks are using umbrella rigs but anyone know lures that you can troll and still catch them and that dosent cost so much? Thanks!
Bucktails 1 1/2 oz and green and white are the two best colors. Spoons are good too.
Check out the new spoon on the striperboard page! Neat vidio!
LM, right now you won’t be able to get any bait down to where you want to be to consistently catch them trolling without downriggers or lead core. Best bet would be to try the big water in a few weeks with something like a Stretch 25/30.

The Ben Parker spoon… My new favorite lure! Find the fish on any hump in 50-60’ of water and jig it up and down vertically to entice the bite. Caught teenage fish on it on lanier 2 weeks ago fishing it 50-110’ deep.
Once fish come up shallower you will be able to use it horizontally by casting to schooling fish or just blind casting on a point. I used the horizontal method in TN this past weekend. No takers but man it looked awesome coming back to the boat. Even perfected a “walk the dog” motion with it.

how many oz is that spoon?
3 or 3.3oz I can’t remember which one off the top of my head. It’s thin (maybe 1/8" thick). It’s more of a flutter style spoon than a speed jig.

Not too much. Been a couple weeks since I have been on murray. If you travel and get a taste of different lakes murray becomes very bland…lol…I will go back to fishing murray hard again in prob oct/nov when we can start pulling big baits again. But will make some trips for schooling fish in sept if the temps come down.
To be honest I HATE summertime downrod fishing with a passion. Especially when catching the 18-24" fish murray avgs in the summer. Now I don’t mind downrodding on lanier. You drop a bait down anywhere from 70-110’ deep knowing you have about a 50% chance of catching a double digit weight fish and releasing it. I can do that all day…BUT I have recently become addicted to east TN. And I don’t know if that bug will ever go away.2 trips in less than a month, with another 1 maybe 2 planned for Oct and another in nov… That’s hardcore up there chasing trophies though. You may fish for 2-3 days and only catch 1 fish or you may not catch any…but I would rather fish 3 days for 1 30#+ fish than catch 20 5# fish in a day. But that’s just me.

Based on recent Lake World orders, I’d say bucktails with Snake Worm trailers but like striperskiff said you need downriggers or leadcore this time of year…

I’ve been going out the last few Sundays and am averaging 1-2 fish per trip, using herring. A few weeks ago, I managed to get a 10 lb’r and the following week, one a little over 7. Other than that, it’s been shorts. I’ve been fishing from around 5:30 till about 9:30-10:00 am. Mainly around humps in 60-80 feet of water.
Check your baits often. I’ve been lucky if mine last 10 minutes in the warm water.

I do but I don’t:wink:
Sounds like you got a decision…Atlanta or rural Tennessee. Hope the bride is up for it.
“I may be going to hell in a bucket. But at least I’m enjoying the ride”
As of right now the bride is happy. I come home this past weekend to find out my recent trip to TN cost me. She had a new tattoo and a tanning bed for me to pick up.ha. But I haven’t mentioned Oct yet…hehe… a happy wife is a happy (fishing) life!!

I seem to remember they were actually called Bunka Spoons back when I was growing up.
They are huge, but so are the bunker in the areas they are used. I only fished them a few times, but they are normally trolled with stainless steel line, like most of the striper trolling in the ocean, and I never enjoyed that.
Much more fun to just snag some for bait.
BTW, for anyone wondering; bunker is just another term for menhaden.
