Striper on Moultrie......

According to my fishing log, my boat has had 472 striper come over the rail this year with only 12 of them being keepers![:0]:face_with_head_bandage:

I think the new regs are good, and the “short” fish that we are catching are very close to the legal mark, which is a noticeable increase(to me) from last year and the year before. I am hoping that in the next year or so, we will start getting more keepers at a consistent rate!!

nice catch and bad %. good on you keeping a log. possible that SCDNR might be interested in your data.

what did you catch the largest % on?

i used to catch most of my keeepers on trolled deep diving plugs and lots of shorts on live bait.

(**() Lynn thats a mess o fish , You are right they have grown but not as fast as we expected as last yr we were saying next yr they will all be 26" or better. Maybe next yr:smiley:. I have noticed these fish are very healthy however so may bode well for the future. With the bait there its no wonder the stripers hang around and grow. I thru a net and caught menhaden up to 8" long /// Are these sea run fish? Certainly never seen any like that up on Marion, May be there but spread out more. Some nights at the dam they are so thick i here em bouncing off the boat and catch many foul hooked on lures.

I have been mainly throwing jigs through schools of bait and around the dam. Since I have been catching so many shorts, I feel I will do less harm with a single hook to the lip than sticking them with trebles all over. Plus, it has been a blast on lighter tackle…

I may have to start trolling again. though.
I can’t let Rick catch that 40"+ hawg before me!![:0]

It is a mess for sure with nothing but a good time to show for it. Most of those “shorts” would have tasted great!!
Next year…uh…should be EPIC…ha…we’ll see…

Good to see the fishery recovering, might have to hit the river again next spring.

Lynn
i’m doing an experiment , i’ve changed out the trebles on the lures for single assist circles disigned for jigs, I’m gonna give em a try i’ll let ya know how that works. I’m also worried about doing damage to undersized fish with all those trebles. i have already bent over the barbs that helps but some still get a mouthfull of hooks.
So i’ll report w/ my results

You will get tired of catching them up the Cooper in late April through mid-June…really, wear some gloves or tape up your thumb!

We caught 40 last night. We took 3 keepers home. Could have taken a fourth, but it was real close, so I let it go to grow…

Well, I guess that I made it all up. NO fish on Moultrie, so do NOT waste your time fellow anglers!!

I did put 3 ziploc bags of fish in the freezer today, though…:slightly_smiling_face:
