Was digging through some pix today and came across this one from about 3 yrs ago or so. What do yall think. Not gonna say where it came from yet so it wont influence your decisions. But I will say it did not come from murray.
I have always said it was the fattest striper I have ever seen. But some have said hybrid, not because of the stripes but because of the smaller head and mouth. Going by the stripes I would say striper.
So if it is a hybrid what does one do when u catch such fish in a body of water that isn’t supposed to contain hybrids? No regs on them but if u show up at the ramp and the man is there, I guarantee he is going to write u a ticket.
This fish was caught in the congaree. 26" min length on stripers.
In a body of water where the law doesn’t address hybrids I would just treat it like a striper. They are probably so few and far between it ain’t worth the potential hassle.
Very true. Just playing devils advocate. .lol…I still think its a super fat striper. Could be full if eggs. Was a spring fish caught trying to run to the saluda to spawn. Not to mention we had over a lb of shad in the boat they were all throwing up.
They occasionally get accidentally introduced through ponds. I would also think if a body of water has stripers and white bass there would have to be some potential for a natural wiper
Agreed with the above, hybrid. If the lake you are on has no regulations for hybrids, though, I’d follow the law regarding stripers themselves… if it’s under the striper size limit, it goes back. No striper/hybrid is worth a few hundred bucks worth of fines.
“Sire, it belongs in truth to the Church of God, in whose name I speak, to endure blows and not to inflict them. But it will also please your Majesty to remember that she is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.”…Theodore Beza
Looks like a Hybrid to me … based on shape rather than pattern break-up
These are Hybrids (Allatoona River, GA) …
These are Striper from Lake Murray …
This is a “true” Hybrid (from the Interweb so I have no idea where it was caught) …
Soooo what would that make this one? No laughing at the “using the leg measurement system because forgot the tape measure” method … Long and narrow like a Striper but broken lines like a Hybrid …
Lawcrusher, that last fish appears to be a hybrid to me. Though it’s thinner than the one above it, it is still wider than your normal striper in proportion to its head and mouth. If you caught the hybrid in Murray, you’re not alone. I’ve caught several there over the years. Also, I believe hybrids have more rays on the anal fin than stripers. Not sure, but will look it up. Those fins are different between the 2 species.
Stripers have 11 rays on the anal fin. Hybrids can have 11 or 12; so that’s not a certain id method. Oh well, we can usually tell by body shape and stripes:smiley:
