striper topwater

Do the striper in either lake murray or moultrie school on top during the spring? Was given the opportunity to fish some topwater for stripers last fall, and they were killin it. Trying to get up there again and catch some on the fly.

This is on the dam by the launch at noon April 2, 2012

Wellcraft V-20 sportfish with a 200 Evinrude

Thats all I needed to know! Thanks steelytom. Its a bad day when you remember to bring the camera, but forget to bring a rod. I always have a rod in the car for moments like that. Unfortunately, Im still waiting for a moment like that…

I’ve seen them blowing up baitfish like that this time of year in Moultrie between Atkins Landing and the point of Pinopolis. Last year we saw a school about 100’ across just exploding and boiling the surface. It’s quite a sight ! We had fishing poles that day, but no boat. The water was really low, and we were walking the shoreline working the drop offs. We came back with kayaks the next weekend, but I guess they heard we were coming, no sign of them anywhere.

That’s if you wanna catch schoolies…Let the water get into the upper 60’s and low 70’s then work some of your larger topwater lures in the shallow areas in creeks an around points.

They were schooling on top in the elbow area this afternoon. I caught one on my 5th cast. Then two guys roared in on top of the fish, and circled me three times with their loud running old evinrude, while I believe trolling way too fast for conditions. After they spooked and ran the fish down they finally left. Good riddance!! About 30 minutes later the fish were re-grouped and on top again. Caught and realeased 6 between 18" and 20". They were very hungry and made me wish I had my favorite Spook with me. As it was they liked a Red Eye Shad fished very slowly. I did lose one good fish that would easily have been a keeper. The water is still pretty muddy in this area.

Nice…can you give a very general vicinity. .??

Spoonmaster, I made my last pull in the area you mentioned to me on Saturday. Caught a fat 22 incher by the island with the timber. Water was slightly stained, but I would stop short of calling it muddy. If I can see my baits 4 inches below the surface, I don’t have a problem working an area:sunglasses:

Redstripe, Spoonmaster said the “elbow area”, that is pretty specific.

That’s plenty specific…thanks…Got a million things on my mind with work and I wanna go fishing. Sometimes my ADD mind goes to fast. Not that I will get to go anytime soon.

Fogman, Glad you found a keeper there.
I’ve got a bass tournament this weekend. Most of my guys will be fishing what I consider way too shallow for the big mammas. I haven’t caught a keeper bass in less than 22’ in tne last 2 months. Hopefully, the downlake bass will be shallower than they have been up here. It seems to me, at 48/49 degrees, that the majority of the bigger bass in my area are still in the winter mode instead of prespawn. Have you caught any bass in shallow with the stripers? Hopefully, the guy I’m fishing with will be on something good. I get tired of fishing for small bass in the shallows, especially when I’ve seen what is feeding in the deeper water. Oh well, I guess I can do like last March and cast to the deep side of the boat whenever possible. Good luck in your tournament.

Good luck to you as well Spoonmaster!.. Nope. I haven’t caught any blacks lately while pulling shallow. When pulling that last spot on Saturday, a bass boat pulled in behind me, threw at the point on the large island, and caught what looked like a 14-16 inch largie.
