I typically use bucktails and Road Runners (green, white, or green/white) or Stretch 12’s and 25’s (silver, silver/black, silver/blue) lures when trolling. It does hurt your wallet when you lose a 25 ($$$) though! Overall, losing a few lures is probably cheaper than bait fishing if you consider the cost of bait, salt, and a good bait tank. The flip side is, overall, bait fishing tends to produce more fish year round. IMHO.

I like trolling the Road Runner style, horse head jig, stump jumper whatever you want to call it jig with the spinner blade attached…on lead core line… but I prefer a 2 oz jig in chartreuse with a chartreuse 6" inch Capt. Macks curly tail grub… The 2 oz jigs are hard to find though…I’ve caught stripers on Stretch 25’s in the ocean but just haven’t used them much in freshwater for some reason… While umbrella rigs are expensive, they do catch a lot of fish and you can usually get them back when they get hung-up with a retriever, especially on Lake Murray…windy conditions make it tougher to get them back… They are just harder to get down to fish more than 30’ deep… I troll mostly to scout and cover ground quickly and then switch to live bait or cut bait after I find what I’m looking for…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…

Thanks guys I might just have to try out those stretch lures!

Stretch lures have worked well for me also.

How deep do they run

There are a lot of factors on how deep they run. You can go on Mann’s or Bass Pro Shops’ website and see the diving depth of each style but that is just ballparking it. Boat speed, line weight, length of line, etc. all play a role. In my case, when I run out 150 feet of line, the 25’s seem to run about 20 feet deep and the 12’s 15 feet deep. You’ll know when you start snagging the bottom or even better, if you can dial in your fishfinder to see your lures. Good luck!

LM, if you want to get a good feel for exactly how deep your stretch 25/30 is going, you could always have a boat creep up behind you while you are trolling until they start marking your plug. They are a good size and will show up easily. Look at it first in the water and determine what speed the swimming action looks good to you; probably a little over 2 MPH. Use the same test line you plan on trolling with. I wouldn’t go too light pulling something like a stretch…maybe 20 lb. Then let it out in increments of something like 100’, 150’, 200’…etc… and have the trailing boat mark the depth and record for each interval. I believe you should be able to find some pretty cheap clip on line counters to make it easier. Keeping your FF off will keep the trailing boat from picking up interference, since they will be so close behind.

It shouldn’t take long to do and it will definitely help your success to be able to know exactly how much line to let out to get your plug at the depth you want. Probably save you a few snags too when fishing around relatively shallow water.
