First Mate and I put the new boat in the water yesterday (Sunday)… had a great time just riding… marked a bunch of fish in the old Saluda River channel between Bomb Is and Wessingers… 85-100 ft of water , down about 65-85 ft… couldn’t get a bite though…went to Bear Creek area and First Mate picked up a nice largemouth , about 8lbs or so and I got a small one about 3lbs… all in all , a very nice day… stripers should turn on later this week, I think, with that cold front approaching… hope next Saturday will turn out good… got a guy and his 11 yr old son coming down fron Greenville… good luck to all !!

I hope your right. After this past summers die-off, I’m not optimistic. Thousands of dead fish. If you can. Release your catch.
Redstripe, usually,I keep the first 1 or 2 legal fish and put the rest back… most times a client will only want one or two… if a person acts like they want to “load the boat” when they call, I may be too booked up , or something comes up that they have to call someone else… I don’t have a problem with those that want to keep a legal limit… I just hate to clean that many fish !!

Gary,
I did’nt realize you were a guide. Whats your take on how the die-off has affected the fishing?
Redstripe, I only guide some part time, but IMHO it doesn’t seem to be too bad… we have a die off almost every year to some extent… most of the “floaters” that I saw last summer looked like short fish that were released in bad shape… I didn’t really see any “larger” fish that were in distress… if I fished every day , my opinion might change, but the fish are still out there waiting for my 3/0 circle hook and a fresh Blueback !!

Hey Gary, I live at Jakes and I was out there almost every other day during the fish kill, and I saw the bigger fish. I swear those are some of the biggest Stripers I have seen and I have seen some big fish being weighed in at Lake World. Like you said it happens every year, but this past year does have me concerned because I did see the big ones that I normally don’t see. All the big ones I saw were floating between Spence and the Dam. I’m hoping this will get DNR to think about restocking again…I had heard they have stopped stocking Stripers in Murray. Anyhow hope business is good for you, and we’ll see ya’ll out there soon. God Bless, Brian

Coach,
That’s more along the lines with what I heard. Also I fished thre times this winter with not one fish to show.
Coach, you were on the lake a lot more than me this past year, so I think that you are right… the few times I got out, I must have missed the larger fish… I did see one largemouth up past Bomb Is early last fall that was almost dead… still had a slight kick to her… she must have been about 10lbs or so… hope the cold and wind dies down a bit by this weekend, maybe see you guy’s on the pond… most of the time I answer to “Mangowillie” on 16… good luck to you all !!

my understanding is that there has been no elimination of anual restocking on murray, however, there is now some testing involved with the restocking program. Fish are being released into the lake from various places, and have markings that reference their place of release on them. This allows the DNR to gather data regarding the more hospitable release habitats on the lake. I don’t have a full understanding of the matter by any means, this is just what I gathered from a DNR officer who is over the program, who was the speaker at the December meeting of the Midlands Striper Club.
Autobaun70… that’s great news for me. I talked to a guy at the Fish Hatchery off Fish Hatchery road in South Congaree last March/April sometime and he told me that they were holding back on putting Stripers in Murray. His reason was something about budget cuts, but I know DNR was hiring several new folks this year so maybe they are stocking and if so that great news. Anyhow hope to see some of ya’ll out there soon. I’ll be back on the water Monday I think… if any of ya’ll have reports this weekend I’d love to hear it. God Bless, Brian
