Headed to Lake Murray tonight for the weekend and was wondering if anyone is catching stripers near bear creek/Putnams? My mom has a lakehouse in bear creek (off of Old Cedar pt. near Night Harbor) and her neighbor was saying folks were catching them somewhere in Bear creek.
My Grandfather and I used to catch them a little further out near bomb island sometimes. He would fish 3-4 times a week and could always find them. Seems like we always had to go up near towers this time of year and fish in deep water (60 - 80ft) but just curious as all I have is a small Jon boat. We would always get bait from Jimmmy Jones up at the dam… is he still around?
Anyway just curious if it is worth picking us some herring and giving it a shot close to the house. I was hoping to let my 5 year old catch a striper. If not I usually do pretty good catching catfish on the dock.
I don’t know about the fishing over that way. I haven’t fished BC since the spring, but just to let you know, you can get herring right there at Putnum’s now should you decide to try it.
Jimmy is still around, but as far as I know he just supplies bait to others to sell these days. In fact, I believe Putnam’s buys their bait from him. The same people sell bait at the corner of Wessinger Rd and 76 as well.
The lake water is getting pretty hot. You may find some in the mouth or in the main channel. I was out last thursday and we read temps as high as 91 at the surface. We did well with numbers but not one keeper.
Triton,
Have you been out much? We need to get the flotilla out again soon. I am out of town this weekend, maybe next saturday?
