Stripers In The Salt

Do you guys ever get any stripers in the surf or near shore like they do around Virginia Beach, Cape Hatteras & Cape Lookout?

South of NC, striped bass do not enter the ocean. As a matter of fact, in most cases they never leave the river that they were spawned in. If you want to catch stripers, in the winter and spring months you need to fish the salt-fresh interface and in the summer go way up stream to cool water areas. This will be true in all the ACE rivers, Savannah, and Pee Dee.

That’s mostlty true. However they are caught at the Georgetown jetties and the MI jetties in the fall/winter ocasionally. If you’re ever in Inlet convienience in MI there are a few pix of ones caught at the jetties. I know people that have caught them at the WB jetties. Not enough to target though.

What are a few of the tactics that the folks down your way use in the rivers? What types of structure do your river fish relate to best. Around here they really like the deeper holes with shallow water access nearby. The fish here will stage on just about any type of current break but they seem to like the fallen timber best. You can pull and work both bait and artifiiclas by the lays and get some awesome strikes! The combinaition of the heavy current and 20 to 30 pound average makes for an awesome fishery. The boating can be a little hairy but the fishing is a blast!
