Caught a few small stripers up the river yesterday. I was wondering how far from Charleston you have to go to get into big stripers. 20 lbs plus? Thanks everybody.
Saw you catching them yesterday, don’t tell anybody. Thats a secret spot.
Local Boy, Just having fun.
I’ve got access to a really good pond with hybrids in it, only thing is we can only get them to bite on boiled peanuts.

working hard and playing harder
20+ pounders, I’d say Lake Moultrie…
there used to be a guy on this site, his handle was Wily. he knew quite a bit about the river stripers here. not sure he’s still around, you could use the search feature.
i saw some nice pix of winter time fish he’d caught
Run Bennet’s Point road to the bridge over the Ashepoo up or down river. Steel bridge landing off hwy 17 (Combahee) up river find some deeper drops with structure and a live minnow or troll. Edisto river put in at Willtown (up or down stream).
Still a little early for them, but after Christmas 20lb+ are possible. 8-12lblb more common.
If you chunk them and boil lightly then add lemon and butter, taste like mock lobster. well kind of.

I want to find them on the surface feeding. The lakes are too far to go for me but coastal rivers seem to be a good starting point. I dont even care about keeping and eating. Dont get me wrong, i love to eat fish but with our local gamefish im in it for the scenery and the catch. Im gonna check ashepoo.
Thanks for the help.
i have caught many large striper in the cooper largest being 33"s
never seen them schooling like they do on the lake
caught some average sized 5-8lbs in the ashley
Talk to Henry @ Henrys Sport Shop in M.P.
He knows.
Have caught quite a few small fish around Edisto in the past few years but if you want to catch large schooling fish go to Clark Hill Lake on a cold rainy day in Dec. or Jan> and follow the birds and throw bucktails( 3/8 oz. white with yellow feather) let sink, reel slow and hold on!!
I’ll talk to Henry. Thanks dinnertime. I worked on Clarks Hill Lake in 99 2000 2001 and didnt make time to fish it. That was dumb. Ive not been interested in freshwater fishing since i was a kid until recently. Went fly fishing for smallmouth on the Nulichucky River on NC/TN border on my honeymoon back in Sep and it seems like I may have caught a bit of a freshwater fishing BUG! Thanks for the pointers everybody.
Fish the Wando at the entrance to the Mt P State park.Use a big white bucktail. If they are in they will hit. Also the best time is late feb -march.Rantowles bridge as soon as you see the bait on top of the water from the bridge.
Stonoman
Peapod…The person you speak of is me. Quite frankly what Stonoman says is about right. In the Cooper the fish come up as far as Shipyard Creek area…In December I would be down around Goose Creek…My best luck was with a eel…but Bucktail was always on a rod too.
I have fished Rantowles in February and March and caught em…and I know they are in the Ashley, though I cant give you a landmark as I dont know that river…
Was gonna add that in the Cooper them Gunboats ran us off of the best spots for this time of the year…Wonder if they are still out there…You sure could catch em around Goose Creek…
Yep, gunboats are still there…![]()

Anyone had any luck up the east branch of the cooper around Quimby creek and what not?
I grew up on the creek that runs beside the railroad when you go under the trestle at Rantowles and we used to catch rockfish around the trestle years ago right before Easter. Stonoman I never remember seeing the bait you are talking about, what is it menhaden? I also fish Edisto around Willtown and back toward Dawhoo for rockfish but haven’t caught any the last 2 years. If you go toward Bennets Point the landing that was mentioned is “Brickyard Landing” and we used to catch rockfish there before the old bridge was torn down and the new landing put in on the other side of the road from where the original landing was.
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
