They are very deep right now.
Try the greenville striper kings web site, but on second thought you will probably not get much help since there is a TX this weekend. You know how these tournament fishermen:frowning_face: are, you would think it is the Super Bowl.
Seriously I have not had my boat in the water much in the last month due to work and getting ready for deer season. One of my hunting partners catches a boat load of fish in the afternoons on the humps in the main channels right before dark on lead core line with roadruners and with jigging spoons. He is great at this method but it drives me crazy, he really know how to read his graph.
Also most guys are night fishing right now as well if you like that method.
Most of the guides are headed down around the dam in the big water and catching them in 40-60 of water and deep around the thermocline on blue backs.
Good luck and let me know if you need any more help.

Finding the treetops at the dam ,and at night would be your best bet. Fish right above the tops , and hope they don’t wrap you up. be prepared tostay all night ,sometimes they come at any hour . It’s good to see someone here from where I live . Good luck
cool i will print this and pass it along to my trainer…this is going to be shake down to get me comfortable with all the stuff on the boat, reading the graph, setting up the outriggers etc…figure learn all i can on the smooth lake and then transfer all that knowledge for off shore trolling and such…played around last weekend about 3 miles offshore and its a biotch trying to set poles, steer the boat, not tangle lines and all while your bouncing 3-4 ft in the air, hopefully this will go smoother…
BTW i live in easley
thanks for all the help…

Nice sounding boat:sunglasses:
By the way a lot of guys will troll with deep running Manns stretch’s, umbrella rigs and with downriggers and jigs/roadrunners with chartruese tails on them also but you need to get down to where the fish are and do not be afraid to hang up in the trees

tprice…took your advice…left a few lures in the trees lol…
didn’t actually get any in the boat but did learn alot today,#1 my knots suck…but i am getting better…
also i am figuring out the down rigger setup,i was putting to much tension on the release clip:frowning_face:
also saw a floater striper with another fish stuck in his mouth, question why was that???
lots of boats but didn’t see alot of action on any of them…
i will be headed back in the A.M.

ctoolman I have seen the fish in another fishes mouth before too , from what i saw the got it in there mouth ,could not swallow and could not spit back out because of the fins hanging up .
Oh when you get the bugs worked out call me , I want to go
The daytime fishing will be tough this time of year , but they can be had ,just a suggestion …find a good size point that runs all the way to the deep water and work it hard , most of the times they are on the sides of it .Try different depths and speeds untill you connect…fast should be good this time of year…go about twice as fast as you think you should go …I might take my bro-in-law today just to let him try his new rod-n-reel out . Good luck
If you can tie it a palomar knot works great, also I use the uniknot and the old standby improved clinch knot.
Yea those trees love lures but like I was told many years ago buy an older guy “son if you ain’t getting hung up you ain’t fishing where the fish are” (funny thing about that was this was the guy that owned Bagley’s Lure company:smiley:.
It is tough this time of year I guess that is why I start getting ready for deer season. Around Oct after the lake has turned over I will start catching them on planer boards again.
Shoot me an email if you need someone to go with you and I can show you what not to do:smiley:

well today even got worse, lost my umbrella rig and my down rigger weight, thanks to MR DNR cop…he was coming to check my license as i was trolling around and before i could get everything under control,i drifted over a shallower area and got everything hooked up…
he does know i am not very happy with his decision to mess with me(i was totally legal…duh!!),i had only been in the same area for over 2 hrs.i saw him watching me for sometime…so there went 80 bucks to the bottom and since i didn’t have a backup my day was over…i will be getting another downrigger tomorrow so i will have 2…BTW our tax dollars have bought them some nice boats to ride around in all day…
fishinpox…don’t hold your breathe i am a slow learner…but i would like the company sometime…
tprice …you bet i will let you know, heck 2 of us doing the wrong things…cool…it could get expensive…
planerboards, they really come up that far off the bottom??..how cool,i am learning so much…
thanks again for all the incouragement and help…

Hey ctoolman, my buddies from work have been catching a few in the 3 to 7 lbs range. Trolling rebals and bucktails with leadcore over the tree tops. These guys are really good at it. They can read a depthfinder like no one I have ever seen. The guy is like, see that fish? watch that rod… Bam!! Most of it looks all the same to me on the chart but I am learning.
You know the old saying 10% of the people catch 90% of the fish. Well I am not in that 10% with stripers, you got to go to learn so like you I will continue to break of lures until I figure it out.
Good luck!

Well my day was fun …I got to be on the water for 4 hours !
I did manage to get a largemouth about 4 pounds and another smaller one worm fishing. The trolling for hybrids didn’t pay off , but we were upstream ,around the twin lakes area. It got hot fast , we left fast.
ctoolman , I could make you some steel downrigger weights out of 3 inch round steel bar that I have ~(free if you want a few)~,also I can show you the best knot for all fishing ,just as strong as the line,in fact most of the time it breaks some place besides the knot …email me if you want and I’ll give you my phone number .
Waiting on cold weather myself ~my time of the year~

well i need your buddies to ride with me,i see fish all over the graph, not a single confirmed bite…heck i had some fish schooling on the top and i couldn’t even get them to bite and i was casting the lure right in front of them, watch one chase it a good 10-15 ft and then just turn away.i guess the grass hoppers were better tasting to him??..i was like no way…never seen anything like it…
well today was better…i only lost one umbrella rig(a cheaper one this time)and i broke a rod…i think on that one i actually had a fish then he had me…into the trees before i could get everything together…oh well another victory for the fish and trees, but i will prevail someday…
if any of you guys want to go out this weekend and show me the ropes,i will be camping at springfield campground all weekend(sat/sun/mon)site 39…look me up or e-mail me and i will send you my cell #…

I also lost the downrigger ball on my downrigger as well. I need to replace it. I was starting to get the hang of catching them on that thing.
The umbrellas, I have had a little success but it has been hit and miss. This time of year you can normally find them schooling near the dam late in the afternoon.

Hey ctoolman, work buddies caught 20 last friday. All 5 to 7 lbs. They had huge chips on their shoulders this morning. All on bucktails with a chartrusse(sp) trailer. I am going to try to fish this week and hopfully the weekend. Got a wife that is about to pop with our first one so I have to stay close for that. I am kind of wait and see right now. They are talking about going on Wednesday after work I may try to tag along then. What kind of depthfinder do you have?

i have a garmin 3005c charplotter/gps/fish finder…it shows the fish real good but there are so many they hide the trees sometimes…
2001 23 ft outrage with twin 150 opti’s…
ctoolman, are you able to tell the difference between trees, bait, and stripers? They all kind of run together on my cheep-o system. The work crowd uses an eagle 480s and 320s. They are relativly cheep systems but they can reed them well. Your unit is alot better than those.
For what it is worth, they caught 2 on Thurdsay between 3 boats, 20 on friday on 1 boat and 5 on saturday between 2 boats. So obviouly friday was a freak day. I assume you are trolling leadcore? How deep do you think you are getting? We troll 8 colors at 2.5mph. That gets us down to about 25-30 feet.
You gona sit there or you gona fish?
Scout 242 Abaco F225 Yamaha
trees yes…bait from stripers, not sure on that one yet…i am learning so much i am having system overload…lol…but i sure am having fun trying…it doesn’t matter how good my equipment is,if your buddies know what they are doing they will still out fish me anyday…
i also learned i may be trying to deep,i was told to run the channel and drop down to 40-60 ■■■■■■■ iwas trying to drop down within 10 ft of the bottom(didn’t know better)…no lead core, just regular 20lb mono?should i change…
also i am going to slow, only about 1.5 mph…i will change that this weekend too…
i maybe slow but i don’t give up easy…i do have 1 thing the fish don’t have…the internet,i will prevail…pretty bad when your a grown man trying to out smart the fish…
2001 23 ft outrage with twin 150 opti’s…
ctoolman, we have put in at the camp ground you are staying in this weekend the last few times we went out. We troll 47lb lead core line with 8 colors out (10 yards per color) at 2.5 mph with a 10-15 foot wind-on mono leader. Buck-tails and rebals have been working. Troll in 40 to 80 feet of water. You will be looking for trees that are 20-40 feet down. Usually you will see large schools of shad above the trees down about 10-20 feet. Pay close attention to your finder for darker lines around the tree top representing the stripers. (I find this to be the hard part) Keep in mind that your lead core at 8 colors is about 27 feet down. Adjust speed and amt of line to drop or bring up the lures. If using lead core don’t stop the boat. The lead core along with your lures will sink into the tree tops and you know what happens then. Try fishing off the points and the mouths of the creeks in that area. That has worked for me and the work crowd. I am sure the down rigger will work but I have not used one. You will find them this weekend. Don’t give up!
Will you be in the Whaler? I am hopfully going to try my luck as well. Have to wait and see how the wife is doing.
You gona sit there or you gona fish?

yes i will be in the whaler,it has a blue t-top and will probably be going in circles…that would be me.
i keep forgetting to congradulate you on your soon to be new addition…i hope the best for you and your wife…
