Stripers on the Cooper or Wando?

Has anyone seen the stripers?

read the thread about fishing for trout caught stripers.i will tell you i went back 2 more days and the stripers had moved down river past the line into the fresh water, because my father in law and i saw them attacking shad or some kind of baitfish.this time they wouldnt bite anything we threw at them.i believe they are moving
downriver to spawn.

Thanks for the info.

Heard the rocks were getting tore up by the dam.Seems a little early for me, will investigate next week.

lucky, are you talking tailrace or lake side.i caught over twenty in the last 2 weeks way back upriver.they should be moving that way now, because we were going farther and farther down river as the days
have gone by chasing them.everyday they were a couple of miles further downriver last week.they are moving to spawn.

They spawn upriver man, they are in the salt to fatten up for the spawn!
Probably going down following bait and will be going back up to the rocks to spawn…hence rockfish!

calibogue, actually they spawn in the fresh water.thats where they are heading now.these fish do this about this time every year.a week ago or so they were all the way back at the fresh/salt line.we fished
that school 4 times in the last week or so.caught 20+ (12 in 45 minutes one morning)we finally lost track of them yesterday at the tee.thats quite a distance.like i said they do this every year.when my father and i chased stripers up and down the east coast years ago when he was alive, sometimes we went inland down rivers 60+ miles because the locals where we were said the stripers were in their spawn.supposively once they spawn, these riverene stripers here find deep spots in the river to spend the summer, then in late fall move back to the salt.this is what the dnr people tell me anyway.and also articles on our sc saltwater stripers.anyway,if you want to go this fall or winter, stay in touch, cause when they hit the salt again,i know where they live…good luck…tight lines. ps. i also know a good summer hole on the cooper…deep water…east branch

Hey Surfman, we must have misunderstood each other. Yes, I am aware of their ecology and life cycle too.
Rockfish are very “site specific” regarding their habitat as you know.

hey, lets just go catch some, they pull harder than anything i ever caught in the surf. tight lines

I think you got your up and down bakards sc surk.

im dazed and confused i guess.

Much like my spelling my sanity comes and goes.

me and father in law going to the east branch tomorrow and see if we can find those stripers again.they probably haved moved on,but we will try.

you think your insane, try fishing under the mark clark bridge for stripers in a 14 ft canoe.and wasnt at all worried about swamping.
game warden tried running me off 2 or 3 times because i was tied off to the bridge.amazing what a big fat striper being put in his boat
did to get him off my back.i did have a few nervous moments when a
floating crane,or container boat went by and made big…wake.what a person like me will do to catch fish.next year when the fish are back under the bridge again (back to the salt)put your boat in at the little park on virginia ave right by the mark clark.you only have to go out the creek and the fish are right there.also caught reds and trout there too.

SC Surfman,

Is the place on Virginia ave only suitable for canoe/kayaks? I’m putting some rod holders on mine this weekend and will be looking for places to fish after work during the week.

all kinds of boats put in there.its the park thats right by the off ramp right by the bridge.you put in there and paddle out the creek
to the river.be careful.there is some godawful current where the creek meets the river.but, you can catch spottail, trout, flounder, etc all within rowing distance.good luck.when you come off the mark clark
its right straight across virginia ave. tight lines.

sc surfman, do you live in that area? I’ve grown up in the area and fish Goose Creek for stripers and largemouth, as well as trout, etc., but never tried the bridge for more than sheepies. Thanks for the information and I’ll give it a shot. And, I’m always looking for someone to go with, since I work 4 on and 4 off, I’m always in the water. Tightlines.

i live out in the north area.youll have to try the stripers there next year.they are in the fresh water now.youre right, you can catch sheepies ,flounder, spottail, trout, lots of trout on the bank straight across the river.yeah i work crazy shifts too.im off this coming friday through sunday.but im fishing north folly right now because the whiting are in and the trout are hitting good.this winter ill put you on some stripers in the salt. surfman

10-4 and thanks. I’m going to venture into the blue water Friday, wind permitting. And the whiting are biting, too. Went on an expo with the wife’s company and caught a bunch in the surf on the south side of Capers. Good Luck.
