Stripers on the fly?

I know I have seen at least one person on here fly fishing for striper. How many others do it?

I just got a really nice fly rod that is perfect for top water striper, and will begin learning how to fish with it over the winter. Hoping to catch a few on the fly when they start back schooling in the spring. Unless they can be caught way up river in the winter as well.

Any thoughts, tips, type of flies, type of line, etc.

Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, intermediate(Airflo Ridege Striper or Wulff Monoclear) or sinking(Rio Striper) lines top the list(hardly ever throw a floater for stripers). Subsurface flies(clouser or deciever types) will outdo poppers etc.
Little assortment I tie for winter stripes.

I actually enjoy fishing deeper for the srripers in winter when they bunch up. Just b/c they aren’t “schooling” doesn’t mean they aren’t feeding. This is my #1 winter fly, the Coyote.

Now thru winter is a great time to catch them on fly. Like RK, an intermediate line is what I use. I am casting to fish I know are feeding, not just dredging the bottom. Though if you know they are hanging on a particular spot that is an option as well. I usually stay after it til it gets really cold.

Thanks RK for the information. The last 2 times out I caught some on the clouser minnow. probably would not have even dusted off my 9 weight till I read your posts.
