Stripped drain plug

I have a 5/8" brass drain plug that is stripped. I have tried everything to loosen it to no avail. I have used vise grips and even the special sockets designed for stripped bolts.

Any ideas?</font id=“red”></font id=“size3”>

Can’t you unscrew the 3 screws and just put in a whole new drain plug? Hole, plug and all?

I had the same thing happen a few years ago and I drilled it out. If you do this, drill a smaller guide hole first.

What kind of sealer should I use if I do this option? 7200?

Let's hope it's bronze, not brass. Brass will fail in salt water.

The suggestion to replace the entire assembly is good advice. Do it.

Have you tried a pipe wrench? That will do it I (almost) guarantee it.

4200 or 5200 would be perfect. Use painters tape around it so caulk does not get everwhere.

Before I did this I would heat it up (careful not to heat the gelcoat) and turn it with a large wrench.

If you don’y want to use heat buy some PB Blaster from auto parts store. That stuff is good. Unless you know for sure it is stripped and knot just siesed up. If it got cross threaded might as well change it.

The problem with applying that much force is, it's likely to break the fitting loose from the transom. It would then leak or he might even break the screws off and have to deal with trying to remove them or drilling three more holes for new screws.

The plug doesn’t need to be very tight to prevent leaks. Just tight enough that it won’t fall out. Moderate pressure with a five inch wrench will do it. Overtightening is probably the reason it’s stuck.

I’ve had good luck with cutting a slot through the end and putting a monster slotted screwdriver with vise grips or a wrench attached for leverage. Works almost every time. Liberal doses of liquid wrench or a similiar penetrating oil also helps.

How hard is it to remove the 3 screws and install a whole new fitting?

Not hard at all. Take the screws out, use a flat screwdriver with a rag behind it to pop it out. Start on one side, pry out a little and work your way around it. Make sure the hole is clean and dry, I would apply 5200 directly on the flange of the new plug all the way around, put it into place and secure. Some folks put a little 5200 in the hole of the boat itself, but I would’nt, make it hard to get out if it ever happens again.
