The fishing out there is still going off. The Stalker a 57 Spencer that usually stayes between Venezuala and St Thomas made the trip over this year and it has been god for them. They fished three days in the lst week at the fingers, which is 40 something miles from Cabo and they really racked the numbers. They caught like 65 one day, 81 the next and ended it up with 101 on the last day. I know that these numbers seem crazy but these are guys that I would definatly believe what they told me. They know what is and isn’t a catch. They also said that there is no way those other guys caught 174 because they were sun up to sun down steady without having to go get more bait and it almost killed them to put up those numbers. Just wanted to pass it on. Wish I was there getting a little piece of that. And good luck to the three South Carolina anglers that are participating in the WBS Anglers Championship this week in Costa Rica. I am sure they will make us proud.

I’m trying to be objective about it…and I know 179 sounds impossible, but I’ve caught over 100 trout (with 4 anglers) in less than 3 hours.
I don’t think all 179 were “caught fish” but I do beleive they hooked and popped off that many.
Like I said earlier…I know some of the fish were hooked with the wind on already on the rod.

Tzer: how are you doing? Heard there was an accident, but no details except that you were hurt. Hope you are on the mend.

Greg- obviously you have never caught a striped marlin if you are comparing them to catching a trout,or understand what is envolved in an actual catch. I have never said they may have not had that many bites but their reports were they broke the single day mark set by Ronnie Hamlin for sails in Guatemala last year. That is all I am saying is BS. I could care less if they had hooks in that many and broke them off. That just shows had big of idiots they are and that they don’t really know what is going on. That is like saying you caught every fish that you had a bite out of last time you went fishing. Especially with stripys. They feed like dogs and will hammer baits pulling drag, but they also are not always actually hooked. That is my two cents. I was just wanting to pass on a good fishing report most people wouldn’t normally hear about.
Marsha- Thanks for asking. Everything is healed up fine. And am back to normal. Hope all is well for you.
I have caught many Stripes in Cabo and up in Mag Bay and I think anyone trying to catch more than 10 in a day is an idiot. Personally I get bored after about 5 and am ready to go look for something else.
However, the amount of time it takes me to drop a live bait over the stern to a school of lit up fish is about the same as it takes me to cast a grub towards a bank and retrieve it 20 feet.
I told you I don’t think they were “technical catches”, but I also think people that care about that stuff are tools. They were rigged with wind-ons to a spro swivel to an 18" trace of 30lb leader to a circle hook. That 18" trace mono is where they were breaking the fish off. They had one guy that just kept re-tying that trace leader to the swivel and they had about 8 rods rotating.
They hooked up and broke off 179 Stripes in one day. That’s balls to the walls.
ABSOLUTELY LEGIT!!! David Brackmann is one of my best angling buddies and one of the most honest, meticulous anglers in North America. I have known him and fished with him since 1985. He has been:
- named IGFA Angler of the year for the West Coast
- fishing CABO SAN LUCAS for decades
- running a 100% payout all release tournament annually down there for years.
- a frequent contributor to several Big Game magazines.
He is one of the few anglers I have ever known that doesn’t BS a thing.
He called me the day after they released 179. They were North of the Bisbee tournment boundary. The fish were released from sunrise to sunset - until they completely ran out of bait.
Stripeys fight nothing like blue marlin. They typically do not move around great swaths of the ocean after being hook and are therefore quite easy to 1. release and 2. release in multiple numbers. Dave said there were literally miles of baitballs all over the ocean with marlin on each ball. This was the day of a lifetime and may never be duplicated again.
