Struck gold on thursday 3 Jun 10

Got tired of reading reports and working so seeing the bleak weather propects for this weekend, played hooky and went fishing on thursday. Took my brother and son , left GT marina around 0530 and broke the jetties around six to greet a mixed confused sea that only got worse as we headed out. Hey I was playing hooky and was’nt gonna let a few waves ruin my day. headed out to winya scarp with plans of finding a temp break i’d been internet fishing all week. 6miles out from the ledge in 400ft of water i found it 77/80 deg and found the mother of all defind weed lines. Seas 3-5 ft and short.but weed were hanging together like glue. Looked around and no boats not one, none on radar hmmm to good to be true or something we don’t know like a hurricane is coming and these waves are gonna get bigger? Dropped lines 0900 and trolled the weeds south. 0910 fish on nice mahi slinger/or gaff? From then on it was mahi kaos all day. Ran out of bait by 1100 and tugged lures the rest of the day, i had 30 rigged baits and 30 more spares. Boated some smaller Mahi early not knowing what the day would bring. wish we hadn’t cause our limit came way to soon and we released alot of nice fish. Hooked into a big mako which put on a good show a wore my brother out before chewing thru the leader. My son hooked into and landed an 8ft shark i couldn’t id , brown , sharpnose hell i don’t know was big with big teeth. wasn’t a mako however so it went back where it came from.
We followed that weed line all the way to GT hole and changed out to a feather spread hoping for some tuna before heading home. Not gonna happen mahi wacked those 3 and 4 at a time. We stopped at around 5pm to pull in and head home Mahi followed the lures in and covered us up while we washed blood off the boat, Can’t believe we left with hundreds under our boat but we had had enough. We had struck carolina gold this day and had not even seen another boat the entire day.
final #s which is best guess cause counting was only important for what went into the box
Kept 30 mahi

Gonna eat them tomorrow!! Thanks Rick

I keep saying that some of the best days I’ve had fishing were rough and sloppy… and some of those days were so rough that if the forecast would have been right we would not have been out there to catch them! I’m glad you found those fish…now was that worth missing that fun filled day on the job?! Lol thanks for the report… going on sat despite the weather… hope the fish are out there for us like that!

NICE! thanks for the info

No worries rob
You get the pics i sent ya! hopefully we can get u out there to catch some yourself.
It wasn’t that rough to fish just takes longer to get out there and burns a litte more fuel.
Best day i’ve ever had by far. I mean u can catch those kind of numbers when they pile up around u but we didn’t stop got em on the troll would’ve been chumming if stopped for too long LOL. That was the longest difine weed line i have ever seen out here as well.
Hopefully u guys going tommorrow can find it and tear em up.
1st time i’ve ever spent the entire day without seeing another boat kinda strange but i heard alot of guys bailed out of the GT tourney for weather concerns, i think there are only 7 boats left in it. guess i shoulda entered.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.
