Structure and Soft Bottom on a graph

Good Morning fishing buddies. I have a question for all you fishermen out there that are good reading your graphs. I have a Center Console that came with an Lowrance Elite 5 DSI unit. I am trying to figure out how do you guys tell when you are going over structure and soft bottom like
a) rocks
b) sand
c) mud
d) trees
e) etc…
I want to get the best out of my unit and catch more fish. I been trying to look at videos on Youtube but they only give but so much info. I know some of you guys are real good graph readers and could pass on your knowledge to young fishermen like me trying to learn the game more. Any info will be appreciated…

A lot of it depends on your settings but typically, with the factory settings, “harder” objects return a brighter color and “soft” objects return darker colors but againg, a lot of that will determined by your settings.

“…be a man and PM me.”

What he said. I got same unit. It’s best to split the screen with DSI on one side and depth graph on other. Two views of same thing easier to translate IMHO. Fish on graph a little inverted V. On DSI will be a white spot. Also the thinner the color line the harder the bottom and wider the color line the softer. My motor gave up on me and I was still learning mine too. Hope to repower very soon and get back on the water.

Thanks guys. I been trying to get on the water and learn as much as I can. Been trying to set wave points and all. Its all a learning process.

Best thing you can do is go to spots that you know are either hard bottom or soft. Then go over them slowly and watch your graph carefully. Next time you see the pattern you will know what you are looking at. That is how I have been able to identify, say, a fish laying on its belly on the bottom vs a rock.

Optiker, what was I thinking about. That definite is what I should have done now that I think about it.
